Amateur radio club to host field day

The Big Thicket Amateur Radio Club with host their annual Field Day on Sat., June 28, at the VFW Post 1514 in Village Mills. Amateur radio operators, also called ham operators, will demonstrate the new capabilities and provide information on obtaining a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) radio license to those interested.

Mr. and Mrs. Land celebrate Golden Anniversary

Walter and Brenda Land of Silsbee celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary May 30. The couple was married May 30, 1964 in Dallas. Walter retired from Burlington Northern Railroad with 37 years service and Brenda retired from AT&T Communications with 20 years service.

Silsbee seniors receive CDA

Four Silsbee High School seniors became the only students in the State of Texas to receive a Child Development Associates degree through a Practicum of Education class at Silsbee High School. Alexis Porzadek, Brooke Simmons, Hannah Sturgeon and Elizabeth Coudrain were awarded the National Certification following a practical and written exam.

Fruit carving hobby takes on new meaning

Ukraine native Olesia Barsuk-Griffin came to Silsbee four years ago. Not knowing the language or culture of America, she stayed close to her husband Dallas, whomshe met when he visited the Ukraine and focused on making a life away from her wartorn country. Griffin was living in the Ukraine and had come in contact with Griffin through an international website. The two began writing letters to each other, hers in Russian and his in English.

New Lumberton council sworn-in

Monday night marked the first official meeting of the new Lumberton City Council since the election.Mayor Don Suratt began the meeting by having city attorney Curtis Soileau swear in new council member David Manascalco, and also returning members Dan Bell and Sharon Spears.

PICTURES WORTH A 1,000 WORDS

Spending hours in a tiny darkroom, created out of a coat closet are fond memories for Silsbee Middle School art teacher Rose Stark. Stark has had a love of photography for as long as she can remember and credits those first days spent with her godfather in his darkroom as the reason she takes pictures today.
