Local credit union to celebrate 60 years after starting at the local paper mill

When East Texas Pulp and Paper opened their operation in Evadale, the members decided to form a credit union. Originally, the credit union office was one room in the personnel department. Today, Eastex Federal Credit Union is about to celebrate 60 years of doing business.

Wreath’s Across America

The Silsbee Woman’s Club set out gifts and wreaths, as a part of “Wreath’s Across America” on Saturday at Silsbee Veteran’s Park. The Wreath’s Across America started at Arlington National Cemetery and has grown to a nationwide even on the second or third Saturday of December.

Kountze Santa believes in keeping busy

Santa Claus came riding into town Dec. 6, at the Kountze Library on top of a motorcycle because his reindeer “are busy training.” This was Jeff Graham’s second year to dress up as St. Nick and take pictures with children. To Graham, it was almost like any other day at work.

Elestor Pryor has been doing good deeds most of her life

Elestor Pryor of Silsbee has been volunteering for different events and organizations formost of her life. Approximately six months ago she retired as a volunteer for the Sunshine Resale Shop. However, every once and awhile Pryor still goes and serves lunch to the people at the Silsbee A.R.C. . She was doing just this on October 30, when the president of the A.R.C. presented her with a plaque in honor of her 15 years of volunteer service.

Food Drive for the Holidays

Kountze Dental Center has been working to help the community with their needs for seven years. Even now, they are participating in a nonparishable food drive for the Share Your Christmas Food Drive hosted by Channel 12 News. All proceeds from this food drive will be donated to the South East Texas Food Bank. To help get patients to participate, for every five cans a person donates they will have their name placed in a drawing.

The Boys and Girls Club of Hardin County held their annual Steak and Burger dinner on Thursday at St. Mark Catholic Church. The dinner is a benefit that helps to fund the club for the coming year.

Pre-schoolers raise the bar

Even when All Faiths Day School preschool director Traci Turner made a good gesture for patrons to use its facilities, bad people find a way to put a damper on the day. After the school had collected pennies for a contest, all the coins were sitting in a room near the bathrooms that Turner allowed the patrons to use during the weekend of Oct. 11.

Role Reversal

Cindy Colwell of Lumberton is the type of person to help anyone in need. She works for the Hardin County Crime Victims and is there for anyone who "needs a shoulder to cry on or someone to listen to them." However, three years ago, Colwell's role reversed when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Suddenly, people were taking care of her.
