Fruit carving hobby takes on new meaning

Ukraine native Olesia Barsuk-Griffin came to Silsbee four years ago. Not knowing the language or culture of America, she stayed close to her husband Dallas, whomshe met when he visited the Ukraine and focused on making a life away from her wartorn country. Griffin was living in the Ukraine and had come in contact with Griffin through an international website. The two began writing letters to each other, hers in Russian and his in English.

New Lumberton council sworn-in

Monday night marked the first official meeting of the new Lumberton City Council since the election.Mayor Don Suratt began the meeting by having city attorney Curtis Soileau swear in new council member David Manascalco, and also returning members Dan Bell and Sharon Spears.

Spending hours in a tiny darkroom, created out of a coat closet are fond memories for Silsbee Middle School art teacher Rose Stark. Stark has had a love of photography for as long as she can remember and credits those first days spent with her godfather in his darkroom as the reason she takes pictures today.

Mike Morrison became fond of volunteer firemen from a fellow employee in his company that happens to be one. It has only been a couple of years since he was voted in as a member of the Silsbee Volunteer Fire Department, but Morrison has made his mark as one of the best.

GALLERY: Kiwanis Club of Silsbee One Book program

The Kiwanis Club of Silsbee presented its One Book Program to Read-Turrentine third graders on Thursday morning.

The club handed out 177 dictionaries to students as a keepsake and reference to use at home.

Members that handed out books were Silsbee Kiwanis President Brian Watson, Past Lt. Governor Walter Land, and members Garry Smith, Dean Robinson and Daniel Elizondo.

Better Business Bureau Serving Southeast Texas, held its third Annual Laws of Life Essay Program Banquet on Thursday,April 17.Over 4,500 6th, 7th and 8th grade students throughout Southeast Texas submitted essays for the Laws of Life initiative.
