Kountze fends off Palestine Westwood

Kountze proved why it’s the no. 4 team in the state in class 3A on Friday evening, thanks to a strong bench presence. It took all it could to fend off a feisty Palestine Westwood team in the area round of the playoffs, and the Lions prevailed in an 82-75 victory in Lufkin.

Tigers claw Spartans

On Friday, the Silsbee High School Tiger basketball team traveled to Channelview where they met the squad from Houston Scarborough. The Tigers came into the game with a record of 27-5 and Scarborough had a record of 23-9. For a period of a quarter and a half, it appeared that the two teams were about equal, and then the one big difference in the two teams reared its ugly head before Silsbee took control of the game and went on to claim a 93-56 victory.

Kountze fends off Palestine Westwood

Lions advance to regional quarterfinals to face Hempstead.

Kountze proved why it’s the no. 4 team in the state in class 3A on Friday evening, thanks to a strong bench presence.

It took all it could to fend off a feisty Palestine Westwood team in the area round of the playoffs, and the Lions prevailed in a 82-75 victory in Lufkin.

The Lions’ game plan was quickly changed after foul trouble haunted the team, however, the win lifts Kountze (30-6) into the third round of the playoffs to face Hempstead (30-6) in the UIL Region III class 3A regional quarterfinals at Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Basketball playoff schedules

Five area teams remain alive in the basketball playoffs.

Silsbee, Kountze and Evadale boys teams cruised in the area round, and Lumberton and Evadale girls are headed to the regional tournament.

Here is the upcoming schedule.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Region III Regional Semifinal Playoffs

Class 5A: Lumberton (27-4) vs. A&M Consolidated (20-5), Friday at 3:30 p.m., Aldine ISD M.O. Campbell Center, Houston

Class 2A: Evadale (30-4) vs. Hubbard (24-8), Friday at 5 p.m., Leon High School, Jewett

BOYS BASKETBALL: Region III Area Playoffs

Class 4A: Silsbee (27-5) vs. Houston Scarborough (23-9), Friday at 7 pm, Channelview High School, Channelview

Class 3A: Kountze (29-6) vs. Palestine Westwood (17-13), Friday at 8 p.m., Lufkin Middle School, Lufkin

Class 2A: New Summerfield vs. Evadale , Friday at 7 p.m., Huntington High School, Huntington

Kountze proves it’s no. 1

The Kountze Lions needed a fourth quarter surge and triumphed 65-56 in the final three minutes of a first place playoff game with no. 5 Buna to claim the top spot in District 23-3A With the win, no. 4 Kountze (28-6) faced Hitchcock (11- 14) in Dayton in a Region III 3Abidistrict game on Tuesday night (results late).

Lady Raiders advance to Regional tourney

The Lady Raiders defeated Port LaVacca Calhoun on Friday by a 49-37 score to advance to a game with Galveston Ball on Tuesday. Lumberton led throughout the game with Calhoun. They led 27-21 at the half and
slowly built that lead to the  final margin of 49-37.

Lions claim pair of wins to tie for first place in district play

The Kountze Lions ran their record to 26-6 and 12-1 in district play with a pair of impressive wins 119-56 over Warren and 80-61 over Kirbyville. The wins left Kountze in a tie for first place with a Buna club that is now 25-8 and fresh off a pair of wins over Hardin, 72-19 and Kirbyville 76-58.

District crown in jeopardy for Silsbee

Year in and year out, the coveted matchup between Silsbee and Hardin-Jefferson basketball never fails to entertain. On Friday, the Hawks were destined to make a run at the district crown, while Silsbee stood its ground as the no. 6 team in class 4A.

Tigers have no mercy on LCM

When the season started, the Silsbee Tigers had only one returning starter, a group of underclassmen, and many anticipated that they would have a good team but certainly not a great squad. Now as the season moves into its final week of regular season play, the squad has a record of 25-4 and is currently on a 15-game winning streak.

Kountze makes statement win

Pegged as one of the biggest games of the year for the Kountze Lions, entering Friday’s rematch with league leading Buna meant all the stakes were on the table. After being shocked by the Buna Cougars on January 13 on its home court, and dropping from the top spot in the state in class 3A, Kountze set its mind on winning with no questions asked.
