JUDGE DREW O’NEAL BACON
Judge Drew O’Neal Bacon, 88, of Newton died Thursday, February 5, 2009 at Harbor Hospital in Orange.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 9 at the First United Methodist Church in Newton with burial at Newton City Cemetery.
Judge Bacon, born on May 16, 1920 in Gilmer, graduated from Frankston High School in 1938. He served with the 85th Seabee Battalion in Alaska during World War II. Upon graduation from The University of Texas in 1949 with Business Administration and Law degrees, he began private practice in Newton.
He was elected District Attorney, 1st judicial District of Texas in 1957, where he served through 1959. Judge Bacon was appointed State District Judge, 1st Judicial District in 1959 and served in that capacity until 1989. From 1989 to the present, he served as Senior Judge, State of Texas, making him the longest serving State Judge in Texas judicial history.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Murphy and Lillie Dee Bacon; and brother, Murphy Bacon, Jr.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Sue Cole Bacon; children, Drew O’Neal Bacon, Jr. and wife Michelle of Magnolia, Sylvia Bacon Thompson and husband Randy of El Dorado, Arkansas, DeLayne Bacon Pascal of Cape Cod, Massachusetts and Roger Howard Bacon and wife Karla of Newton; brother, Billy Bacon and wife Pattye; and he was known as Pappy, Judgee, Poppy and Grandpa to his grandchildren, Davasha, Micayla and Drew “Trey” O’Neal Bacon III, Tara Thompson Cosgrove and husband Ryan and Devon Thompson McCall and husband Chris, Alexis Pascal and Lawren and Brittny Bacon.
Memorials can be made in honor of Judge O’Neal Bacon to the Newton County Courthouse Restoration Fund, P.O. Box 296, Newton, Texas 75966.
TOMMY WAYNE MITCHELL
Tommy Wayne Mitchell, 53, of Kirbyville died Thursday, February 5, 2009 at his residence.
Funeral services were held Sunday, February 8 at Adams E.E. Stringer Funeral Home in Kirbyville with burial at Zion Hill Cemetery.
A native and lifelong resident of Kirbyville, he was a scaffold builder.
Survivors include his parents, Ruby and Tom Mitchell of Kirbyville; sister, Linda Crane and husband Aubrey of Kirbyville; and nephews, Bradford Lee Crane and wife Julie and Derek Lynn Crane.
KENNETH MORGAN
Kenneth Morgan, 79, of Jasper died Monday, February 9, 2009 at CHRISTUS Jasper Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. today, Wednesday, February 11 at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home in Jasper with burial at Olds Cemetery.
A native and lifelong resident of Jasper, he loved History and wrote for the Jasper Newsboy for over 15 years. He also wrote for the Buna, Kirbyville and Woodville papers and wrote his book called Morgan’s East Texas Tales around 1997. He loved his family and enjoyed working with wood and building all kinds of wooden things. He loved to sing music and play the guitar, banjo and keyboard, playing at nursing homes every Friday. He played the guitar, banjo and keyboard. He was a WWII U. S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Dorthy Sunday Morgan of Jasper; daughters, Deborah Morgan and Laura Clark, both of Jasper; sister, Judy Morgan of Jasper; grandchildren, Brent Crowson, Shawn Crowson, Morgan West and Heather Goodman; and great-grandchildren, Megan Crowson, Kenneth Crowson, Cambria Crowson, Colby Goodman, Cierra Farmer and Tamika Lawson.
ARTHUR “TUFF” SMITH
Arthur “Tuff” Smith, 64, of Buna died Monday, February 2, 2009 at CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont.
Funeral services were held Thursday, February 5 at First Assembly of God Church in Buna under the direction of Broussard’s Funeral Home with burial at Antioch Cemetery in Buna.
He was a longtime resident of Silsbee, but spent the last three years in Buna. He was an operator with Parks Lease and Vacuum of Kirbyville. He also served his country in the United States Army.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline Smith; sons, Robbie Smith and wife Tisha of Beaumont and Michael Smith and wife Kami of Honey Island; grandchildren, Taylor, Alex, Emily and Tessa Smith; sisters, Jennie Hathaway of Gist, Beverly Fredieau of Spurger and Alice Dear of Silsbee; and brother, Roland Smith of Silsbee.
