LADY BUCS FALL TO LADY HORNETS

Print
In what started as one of their finest first quarters played all year, the EC Lady Bucs melted down in the second half to fall to district foe, the Hardin Lady Hornets in district playoff action last Friday night, 63-54 at Hardin-Jefferson gym in Sour Lake. The game began in promising fashion as both teams shot a blistering percentage from the floor in end-to-end action. The Hornets held a slim 22-20 lead as the first quarter sounded and fans settled in thinking they were in for some real offensive fireworks.  A number of Lady Bucs started out fast. Madalyn Bertrand, Lindsey McDonald and Ali Way all finished the quarter with four points apiece. Senior Courtney Joseph added two points and even better, the next rotation of Nicole Honea and Abby Johnson recorded some big minutes for the Bucs and chipped in six points for EC.As the second quarter played out, it looked as if EC’s superior depth and bench would be the difference in the game. Hardin’s shooters cooled from the floor and EC looked like they were beginning to take the game over.  Center’s Jasmine Carrington and Way stepped up big for the Bucs. Carrington cleared the boards, and finished the quarter with four points. Way was equally impressive, recording three rebounds and five points in the quarter, bringing the crowd to their feet as she finished a fast break with an impressive coast to coast steal and layup.  Honea recorded another basket for the Bucs in the second, as did sophomore guard Mattie East. When Autumn Scott dropped in a free throw late in the period, EC took a 36-34 lead into the halftime break. EC should have kept playing. The Lady Bucs managed only seven points in the third quarter. Hardin scored 15 behind sophomore sensation Stephanie Barker who kept charging the basket, and a large part of the action was spent at the foul line. Hardin shot an astounding 47 free shots to EC’s 20 and it became apparent to EC fans that this game might be won or lost at the charity stripe.  For EC, the opportunities were few and far between.  Carrington tried to keep EC close in the fourth with six points, but turnovers and free throws sealed EC’s fate. The horn sounded 63-54, and the Lady Bucs ended the 2011 campaign as the second seed in District 24AA.Carrington led EC in scoring with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Way also posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.  Honea chipped in seven points and McDonald and Bertrand finished with six points apiece. With the win, Hardin secures first seed and a bye in the first round of state playoff action. EC advanced to the bi-district round for a 6:30 p.m. game Tuesday against district 23-2A foe Centerville.  The game was played at Caney Creek gym.
