The last time the Silsbee Tigers and the Lumberton Raiders met for the Village Creek Bowl was back in 2003. In that game, the Raiders were victorious but the Tigers still led the series 15-5.

This past Friday night the Raiders looked to defend their perfect non-district record against a 1-1 Tiger team. After a hard fought battle, the Raiders came out on top, beating the Tigers by a score of 20-14.

After winning the coin toss, the Raiders received the ball and carried it to the Silsbee 44-yard line. Things looked a little shaky at first, with Ryan Asher losing three yards and having to recover his own fumble and Ryan Hughes being sacked for a four yard loss.

Once Hughes connected with Jesse Sparks for a 55-yard reception the tide changed. Asher then carried the ball three consecutive times, scoring the first touchdown of the night with 8:21 left in the first quarter. The PAT by Guiterrez was no good, giving the Raiders a 6-0 lead.

The rest of the first quarter was a defensive exhibit by both teams. Silsbee had a series where quarterback Jeremy Johnson hit two out of three passes for 16 yards, but the Raider defense held the Tigers steadfast. Lumberton took over after the punt, but were held to a net loss of two yards, being forced to punt themselves.

In the next series, the Tigers were stopped with Jesse Sparks intercepting a Johnson pass. The very next play from scrimmage, Johnson for the Tigers intercepted a Hughes pass, returning the ball to the Tigers. Silsbee began working their way upfield as the quarter expired.

In the second quarter things started off with Johnson being chased back 30 yards before completing a pass to Jarrian Rhone for a 12 yard gain and taking the Tigers to the Lumberton 14-yard line.  The Raiders defense tightened up and sacked Johnson for a 16 yard loss. A series of penalties pushed the Tigers back to their own 30-yard line. Pheal Hill fumbled the ball after a reception and Jesse Sparks recovered it on the Lumberton 47-yard line.

After gaining 20 yards on a run, Asher carried the ball into the end zone for what could have been a touchdown, but it was called back on a holding penalty. Five plays later, however, Asher once again carried the ball across the goal line with 7:07 left in the half. Guiterrez connected with the PAT, giving the Raiders a 13-0 lead.

For the rest of the half, Johnson completed four of eight passes for 35 yards and carried the ball twice for a net loss of two yards for the Tigers. Hughes completed one pass for one yard and ran the ball two times for a total of two yards.  The half ended with the Raiders leading 13-0.

The third quarter remained scoreless, although the Tigers began a drive from their own 45-yard line that left them on their own 9-yard line as the quarter ended. Just 56 seconds into the fourth quarter, Johnson connected with Rahkeem Bolton for a 14-yard touchdown. The PAT attempt by Caleb Henry was no good, but the Tigers were on the scoreboard 13-6.

After an unsuccessful series by the Raiders, The Tigers tried to keep their momentum going. James Richardson came up with a big sack, setting the Tigers back 10 yards. Forced to punt, the Tigers defense held the Raiders once again in the next series.

Another Raider punt gave the Tigers the ball on their own 48-yard line. Johnson fell back to pass and was once again intercepted by Jessie Sparks.

Two plays later, Hughes connected with Kyler Keith on a 45-yard touchdown reception. Guiterrez connected for his second PAT, giving the Raiders a 20-6 lead with 5:59 left in the game.

Jeremy Johnson came out passing after the Tigers received the kickoff. He hit six out of six attempts, moving the team downfield from their woe 34-yard line. The final pass of the series was a 30-yard touchdown reception by Pheal Hill. The Tigers lined up for a two point conversion, but the Raiders defense chased Johnson back out of the pocket. In an amazing pass, Jarrian Rhone caught the ball bring the Tigers within a touchdown. The score was 20-14 with 2:58 left on the clock.

The Raiders took over the ball on their own 47-yard line after an on-sides kick was recovered by Sparks. Hughes ran the ball three consecutive runs, giving the Raiders another first down. Asher had a two yard run, but another quarterback keeper that went for 27 yards sealed the Tigers fate. The final seconds ticked off the clock and the Raiders record in non-district play was 3-0; the Tigers fell to 1-2.

After the game, Coach Credeur commented about his team. “The kids fought hard,” he said. “It was a great game; knew it would be because they have great athletes. I was proud of the kids for hanging in there and coming out victorious in the end.

“Our defensive line put a lot of heat on their quarterback and that helped us a whole lot. Of course, the touchdown there at the end, everybody could see that was a big play. But defensively I thought we did a great job of containing their speeds. I’m going to say cudos to our defensive line. James Richardson was big tonight. James was big; he had a lot of heat on him.”
