By SCOTT REESE WILLEY Hometown Press Tug on your boots and grab your Stetson and head to the Winnie-Stowell Community Park this weekend.Flying J Rodeo Co. and Kim and Cody Ackle of Winnie are sponsoring the fifth annual Winnie Pro Rodeo on Friday night and Saturday night.
Sanctioned by the Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association and benefitting the East Chambers FFA, the two-day event includes eight major contests of skill and daring, including bull riding, bareback riding, barrel racing, girls breakaway, team roping, steer wrestling, calf roping and saddlebronc riding.
Competition begins at 8 p.m. each night at the Winnie rodeo arena. Area rodeo fans are encouraged to come and cheer on local cowboys and cowgirls who are entered in the competition.
Don't own a pair of chaps or a lasso? That's okay. The two-day rodeo also includes four featured events for locals, including the always-humorous wild cow milking, mutton bustin', junior bull riding, and calf scramble.
Champion buckles will be handed out to the winners of the wild cow milking contest. Ten kids six years of age or under will be allowed to take part in the mutton bustin' competition each night.
The junior bull riding competition is open to high school kids and younger. The calf scramble will be held in two age divisions to ensure that bigger kids don't dominate the contest. Kids 8 and under will compete in one calf scramble and kids 9-12 in the second. Cash prizes will be offered for winners of the calf scramble.
Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for children five throughout 12 years old.Rodeo stock is being furnished by Flying J Rodeo Co.
"It's going to be very exciting and a lot of fun and we hope everyone comes out and has a good time," said Kim Ackle. "This is the fifth annual Pro Rodeo in Winnie and each of the four times before we've had a great turnout and everyone left happy."
