Jeremy Johnson, a senior-to-be at Silsbee High School, made a verbal commitment to West Virginia University to attend school and play football there for the 2010 season.
He visited the school on May 24-26 and made his decision.
"I spoke with the coaches, spent time with my future teammates and felt that I like my chances to play," he said.
West Virginia, which has a record of 42-5 during the past four years, finished the 2008 season as the No. 6 team in the nation.
WVU runs a shotgun offense similar to the one that Silsbee employs and Johnson says West Virginia coaches tell him he will have a chance to play as a freshman. WVU is coached by Bill Stewart.
Johnson had a breakout season in 2008. He threw for 1,800 yards and rushed for 932. His passes were good for 20 touchdowns and he had five interceptions.
He says he prefers to throw the ball to rushing it. However, Silsbee coaches often suggest that the most dangerous play in the Tigers' arsenal occurs when the play breaks down and Johnson has to improvise. When pressed into rushing mode, Johnson immediately becomes a threat to go all the way from any point on the field.
He is a team-oriented player and when questioned about his goals for his senior season he lists no individual statistics. He simply says that the highlight of last year was leading his team to the second round of the Class 3A state football playoffs and his goal this year is to lead the team to state, something Silsbee has not done in a long time.
Johnson was heavily recruited by Oklahoma, Michigan, Baylor, Illinois, Oregon, Texas Christian, Texas, Missouri and Oklahoma State. He visited Oklahoma, Baylor, TCU and Texas during the recruiting process.
The recruiting pressure may bother a lot of players but Johnson says he "appreciates the chance to visit the schools."
The 6-foot-2, 182-pound speedster is the son of Byron and Lanae Johnson.
A verbal commitment is a non-binding agreement between the player and the school.
