Last week we reported that Chili’s had hired a firm to promote the legalization of liquor by the drink within the Silsbee city limits.
This whole situation started while I was in Hawaii on vacation. When I returned home I was a little behind the issue.
Chili's has been one of my favorite places to eat since they opened in Silsbee. With this effort they fell down my list of favorites.
I have never been bothered by other people drinking as long as they leave me out of it and for certain don't run into me. (I've experienced that too).
However, it is nice to be able to go out to eat without people pushing alcohol.
Now if this petition becomes a reality it does not mean that there will be a bar on every corner. Actually a business must receive at least 50 percent of its income from another source in order to hold the license. I just don't think it is necessary and don't want it in Silsbee. With that in mind, I won't sign a petition… (no one has asked) I won't vote for passage of the issue and won't support it in any way.
I actually feel that the company hired to handle the petition drive acted a little underhandedly. They purposely went outside the county to advertise their legal notice that they intended to hold the petition drive.
They paid more to get less coverage on the issue.
Ultimately, the people of Silsbee will have to make a decision of what they want for their city.
For me, the issue has already been decided. I like being able to go out to eat in the local places without feeling that I've gone to the bar.
