Suspect admits fault in fatal hit-and-run

A Crime Stoppers tip helped Traffic Unit Investigators locate the vehicle and identify the driver responsible for the hit and run auto pedestrian accident that claimed the life of a Lumberton man.

Mitchell Glenn Downs, 23, of Lumberton was killed on Thursday, Dec. 6 after he was struck by a pickup truck as he walked northbound along the shoulder of Eastex Freeway in Beaumont.

Police have been reviewing surveillance video from surrounding businesses and had stated that they were looking for a dark colored pickup truck with damage to the front end.

According to Sgt. Rob Flores with the Beaumont Police Department, the suspect issued a voluntary statement in which he admitted responsibility for the crash. Police are not releasing his name until they formally obtain a warrant for his arrest.
