The Silsbee Tigers used a smothering defense, and quick scoring to put the Mexia Blackcats out of the equation in the Region III-4A tournament.

Silsbee (30-5) never relinquished a lead in the semifinals game at Johnson Coliseum in Huntsville on Friday and cruised to a 83-46 win over Mexia.

The win pits Silsbee against No. 2 Houston Sterling today at 1:30 p.m. at Sam Houston State University. Sterling (29-5) defeated Tatum 70-62 last night to earn a trip to the finals.

“It’s scary and impressive, because we are young,” Sigler said. “We still have a lot of work to do, but defensively, we did a great job, and I’m pleased at our game.”

Silsbee set the tone early on its style of play, despite lacking height on a team with no senior starters.

Mexia found its offense out of sorts from the tip-off as Silsbee cruised to a 10-0 run to open the game.

The Tigers defense was set out to hold back Mexia guard Curk Harris, who had scored 41 points prior to the regional semifinals game.

Harris was limited to five points against a stingy Silsbee defense.

“I know they were frustrated, but that’s what we set out to do,” Sigler said. “Anytime we can hold a team to 46 points, then we are doing our job.”

Five Tigers were in double figures in the rout.

Silsbee, not known for its long range shooting, opened up the game with a three-pointer from Trajan Harris that started the early run.

At the end of the first quarter, Silsbee was holding on to a 19-8 lead.

Silsbee kept up its tempo and started the second quarter on a 13-3 run to extend its lead to 21 points.

Mexia scored its most points of the game in the second quarter, but still trailed Silsbee 37-24 at the half.

The Blackcats were in trouble in the third quarter when Silsbee outscored the winded team 25-8.

Junior forward Dontre Thomas led Silsbee with 19 points. Freshman Kalon Barnes followed with 14 points. Sophomores Harris and Michael McCain each scored 12 while junior Travious Grubbs tossed in 11 points.
