After World War II in 1948, the United States government passed the “Sole Survivor Policy” after the Sullivan brothers, five brothers native of Iowa, were killed aboard the USS Juneau on November 13, 1942 during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. It was enacted in order to protect members of a family from the draft or combat duty who have already lost family members in military service.
