Longtime Silsbee firefighter honored, remembered

More than 1,200 people, including firefighters throughout the area, packed into the Silsbee High School Auditorium Aug. 6 to pay their final respects to a longtime volunteer fireman who was also very active in the community.

Silsbee Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Jay Hinkie, 61, died Aug. 2 after he was struck and killed while working an accident on FM 418, one mile east of U.S. 96 Business, according to Silsbee Police Chief Waylan Rhodes.
