James Leo Smith, 93, of Portland, Texas passed away December 21, 2017. James, or Jimmy as his friends called him, was born December 7, 1924 in Canton, Mississippi. After high school, James attended the University of Tennessee before joining the Army Air Corp to fly planes. After the war, he went to work for and later retired from International Paper Company. After moving to Nacogdoches, he met and married Jane Elizabeth Spurlin in 1954. Jane preceded him in death in 2010. James and Jane lived in Beaumont, Silsbee, and Nacogdoches, Texas and were longtime residents of Henderson, Texas before moving to Portland, Texas. James is survived by two sons, Clark and wife Teresa Smith of Portland, Texas, Claude and wife Nancy Smith of Colleyville, Texas; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 27 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Laird Funeral Home with graveside at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 28 at Alazan Cemetery with Bill Sherrill officiating. The family of Mr. Smith is being served by Laird Funeral Home.
