KISD bandmember wins Outstanding Performer Award at State competition

Even though school ended at the beginning of June and end of May, some students are still receiving awards and surprises. For Kountze graduate Kade Shawver, his came in through the mail. This is the second year he received the award, and it is equivalent to winning a state championship in any UIL event.

Kountze student council shines

Kountze High School Student Council was awarded the ighest honor that the National Association of Student Council grants. KHS StuCo was recognized as a 2015 National Gold ouncil of Excellence.The Student Council, with help from their sponsor, Amanda Digmon, put together a thick binder to send in to the NASC. The binder and the activities listed in the binder had tomeet certain criteria and checklists to fill out.

Road to 4-H leads to showmanship

Shawnee Simpson of Silsbee has had her extracurricular activities affect her life in the best way possible. This year, Simpson won Grand Champion Showmanship Senior Division with her swine. She became involved in 4-H during her 6th grade year mostly due to her older sister, who also showed animals.

Kountze police dept. gets K9 unit

Although the Kountze Police Department was almost merged into the Hardin County Sheriff's office last year, they have worked hard to get asmuch work done with the budget they have. Police Chief Brent Slaughter has sought out and applied for as many grants and free materials as he can get for his officers. The newest addition to the team is their K-9 unit.

Erikson named Teacher of the Year

After teaching for over three decades, Kountze Elementary teacher, Donna Erikson, received the "Teacher of the Year" award for the very first time. Kountze Chamber of Commerce held its annual banquet on February 26 at the County Seat Music Hall in Kountze where Erikson was announced as the award recipient. The award is chosen by the Chamber board based on letters of nomination from the various school principals.

Manual Padilla has been selected as January 2015 Employee of the Month for the Hardin County Jail. He is employed as a correctional officer and has worked for the sheriff’s office since Oct. 2009.

Business of the year

Rather than being nominated through a letter, the Business of the Year award goes to a business that is selected directly by the Silsbee Chamber of Commerce Board Members. This year, they presented the award to Southern Nurseries.
