Dot Smith honored for 50 years of service

Thursday, May 11 was an exciting night for the Silsbee Woman’s Club. During their annual banquet, Dot Smith was honored for her 50 years of service to the club and the community. She joined the Silsbee Woman’s Club in 1967 and is still an active member today.

Vintage Owl holds grand opening

The Silsbee Chamber of Commerce met at the Vintage Owl for a ribbon cutting on Friday. The group enjoyed cake and wished the new business a great future. The Vintage Owl, which sells quilting materials and supplies, is located at 110 E. Avenue H in Silsbee.

Lumberton author finally achieving her dreams

What started out as a childhood dream has finally come true for a Lumberton resident after many years of going down different roads. Megan Harding published her very first novel in November of last year.

Harding first started writing approximately two years ago on her novel, “Fallen,” the first in the Fallen Series. However, it wasn’t the first time she actually wrote stories. When she was a child and wanted to be a writer, she carried around notebooks full of stories she would work on.

KISD hosts informational meeting for parents

Kountze ISD hosted an informational for parents on May 4 about the chrome books that all students will be assigned starting next year from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade.

Superintendent John Ferguson opened the meeting with a brief introduction about the use of technology and the need to expand it for students.

“If we don’t start making the move for our kids now, into the 21st century, who is going to do it for us?” he stated. “I’m not trying to sell it. I’m just telling you it’s here, it’s reality, and this is what we are going to do.”

Encouraging teacher selected as Teacher of the Year

At the Kountze Chamber of Commerce Banquet, Amanda Collins was selected to be the Teacher of the Year for the whole school district. This is her 23rd year teaching and her 21st with Kountze. In fact, Collins is a Kountze graduate herself.

“I just wanted to come back home to teach,” she stated.

Collins currently teachers fourth, fifth and sixth grade reading intervention and dyslexia students. She has always enjoyed school, loves children and had great teachers in school.

Returning actors headline Silsbee Little Theatre’s play ‘The Odd Couple’

Silsbee Little Theater now has its production of The Odd Couple underway.

This production company of local volunteers has been putting on plays in Silsbee for nearly 50 years. This was the 47th Annual Dinner Theatre that the crew has produced. In addition, there have been many readings and several other plays that have been produced.

Mitchael honored for serving community

It came as a surprise and honor to Barry Mitchael who received Citizen of the Year from the Kountze Chamber Commerce at the banquet on April 18. In the program it stated that Kountze is a richer community with Mitchael as its member, as he has served the city in numerous ways.

Mitchael was born and raised in Kountze, only moving off for one year when he trained and received his license to be a firefighter. Before becoming a firefighter, he did work in construction for a little while.

Read Ice awarded for contributions to community

More than 150 people were in attendance at this year’s Kountze Chamber of Commerce Banquet, and after many nominations from the community and from members of the chamber, Read Ice was selected to be this year’s Business of the Year award winner.

According to what was written in the pamphlet, Read Ice is a wholesale ice company that was established in 1988 by Mr. Bull Read and has done much for the community. It is now operated by Jeremy Kunk, Read’s son-in-law, who purchased it in 2009 from Read. Kunk had worked for Read while in high school and a little bit while he was in college.

Cemetery meeting set for April 29

The annual meeting of Old Hardin Cemetery in Kountze will be held on Sat., April 29, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the cemetery.

This meeting will be to elect directors for the next three-year term, discuss new rules and general discussion about the cemetery.

Free adult ESL life skills program April 18

Silsbee Independent School District will be sponsoring free adult ESL life skills classes every Tuesday starting April 18 through May 9th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The classes will be held at the Silsbee High School Cafeteria located at 1575 Hwy. 96 N in Silsbee. However, the classes are first come first serve, and only the first 25 to RSVP to Jennifer Feather at Jennifer.Feather@silsbeeisd.org will be able to attend.
