Contested races in Silsbee city council and school board

Three candidates are vying for At-Large Place 1 city council position in Silsbee, while the school board will have two new trustees in place after Saturday.

In Lumberton, two positions face opposition for city council seats.

Below are the candidates in Hardin County:

 

SILSBEE CTY COUNCIL

At-Large Place 1

• James Collins (incumbent)

• Chris Smith, Silsbee businessman

• Gary Strahan, Silsbee businessman and homebuilder

 

District A

UPDATE: One airlifted after rollover

A 31-year-old Kirbyville woman was injured in a rollover on US 96 bypass south of Silsbee at 3:25 p.m.

Jennifer Bland suffered serious injuries as a result of the rollover while driving a Jeep Wrangler.

According to DPS reports, the Jeep went off the roadway while traveling in the northbound lanes of US 96. Bland overcorrected and the vehicle rolled, police said.

Bland was airlifted to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont with serious injuries. However, DPS troopers said she was alert and conscious.

The crash remains under investigation.

Commissioners vote to pursue option as well as for county to pay balance out of reserves

Hardin County commissioners voted to pursue a certificate of obligation as opposed to a general bond to help finance the building of a new facility for its annex. Commissioners met at a special called meeting on Monday to discuss options on how to pursue the construction of the building.

Stanley named Firefighter of the Year

Veteran Silsbee firefighter Dugan Stanley was named as the Silsbee Volunteer Fire Department’s Firefighter of the Year announced on April 9 during its annual banquet. Stanley was also recognized with 20 years of service to Silsbee fire department.

Crash Bang

Roshunda Elam, 43 of Silsbee, was driving east bound on FM 327 when a dog ran in front of her vehicle on Sunday morning at approximately 9:50 am. Elam allegedly lost control of her vehicle, which struck a mail box on the west bound side of the road, hit a culvert and went airborne before striking a fireworks stand owned by Megan McKinney of Silsbee.
