Effects of 9/11

By Meagan Moore

Joe Turner, Jr., or JJ, always knew he wanted to go into the military. Relatives and family members had gone into the service, so for him, it was only a matter of which branch. In 2010, a year after graduating from Kountze High School, Turner enlisted into the Army.

Silsbee home game moved

By Daniel Elizondo

The first home game for Silsbee football will come later than expected.

Silsbee Head Coach and Athletic Director Bobby McGallion said that Friday’s game against Livingston will be moved to Provost-Umphrey Stadium at Lamar University in Beaumont.

Tiger Stadium is currently in bad shape due to the construction of a new track, and officials say it may not be ready for the game on Friday.

Last week, Silsbee ISD Supt. Richard Bain said the construction of the track was targeted to have asphalt poured prior to Friday’s game.

The rubber track surface would not be completed until after football season.

However, recent weather reports show that rain is expected for the remainder of the week, including Friday.

A tribute to fallen deputy

By Daniel Elizondo

The Silsbee Police Department and members of the Hardin County Sheriff’s Department paid tribute to fallen Harris County Deputy Darren Goforth on Friday at the Silsbee PD office.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott asked all members of Texas Law Enforcement to join in the tribute at 11 a.m. by flashing its emergency lights and taking a moment of silence when the fallen deputy’s funeral was to begin.

Citizens all over also showed support by deeming Friday as “Blue Friday”, and sharing moments on social media using the hashtag #BlueFriday.

Along with the moment of silence in the video, see how Silsbee officers are coping with the recent shootings.

We’ve all experienced it in some way or another. Those that live in Silsbee or travel through the downtown area know exactly what it feels like when they hear the blaring sounds of a train horn as it rumbles slowly across 5th Street.
