One killed in Hwy. 96 crash

A Silsbee man was killed instantly when he and the lawnmower he was riding while crossing Highway 96 bypass, was struck by a car on Tuesday at around 2:11 p.m.

Silsbee police confirmed the identity of the man as Walter Lee Odell, 73.

According to witnesses in the area, Odell was at a convenience store on Highway 96 bypass near the Knupple Road intersection and proceeded to cross the highway back to Knupple Road.

“We were directly behind the car that hit him,” one woman said. “We stopped immediately to help, but there was nothing we could do.”

According to Silsbee police reports, a 2009 Cadillac sedan was northbound along the bypass and struck the mower in the inside lane of the highway.

One killed in rollover

One person was killed following a one-vehicle rollover on Texas 327 at around 5 p.m. on Friday. DPS officials confirmed a male passenger was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene west of Village Creek.

Home destroyed by fire

The Silsbee Fire Department responded to a fire in a home at 7291 McInnis Road on Friday evening. The home was fully involved when firemen arrived on the scene. Fire Chief Robin Jones stated that they realized that they could not save the home, but called for mutual aid to insure the safety of the firemen.

Hawthorne Airport

Five planes were destroyed on Tuesday at Hawthorne Airport on Texas 327. Airport Director DaleWilliford said eight planes were toppled and believed to be caused by a tornado after storms rolled through the area. Damage is estimated at $500,000, according toWilliford.

Former contractor sentenced to prison

A Tyler County man is facing a year in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to making a false statement to federal agents. Anthony Welborn Jones, 53, of Warren, was a contractor hired by the Hardin County Disaster Recovery Alliance (HCDRA) to make repairs after Hurricane Rita on Sept. 24, 2005.
