Silsbee businesses honored Thursday

Silsbee businesses and citizens were honored at the annual Silsbee Chamber of Commerce banquet held on Thursday at Silsbee High School. Joe V. Tortorice Jr., founder and owner of the sandwich chain, Jason’s Deli based out of Beaumont, was the guest speaker for the evening.

Downtown renovations

Aproperty management company owned by Steven and Brandi McBride, has begun tearing down a building purchased on the corner ofAvenue H and Fifth Street in Silsbee. Brooke Management LLC purchased the 6,300 square foot property, and also received a license to encroach after a survey revealed that the back portion of the property was one foot over the city’s easement. “It’s taking a lot of time going through all the red tape,” StevenMcBride said. “We do have a tentative completion date, but it all depends on how quickly we get things done.”

Silsbee Chamber Banquet Thursday night

The Silsbee Chamber of Commerce is hosting its annual banquet on Thursday at Silsbee High School with a “Roaring ‘20s” styled theme.

The banquet features the chamber honoring Citizen of the Year, Charles Tarver; Business of the Year, Southern Nurseries; Emergency Responder of the Year, Sergeant Anthony Flower of the Hardin County Sheriff’s office; and Teacher of the Year, Gayle McGallion of Laura Reeves Elementary.

Guest speaker for the evening will be Joe V. Tortorice, Jr., Founder and President of Jason's Deli restaurants.

Tortorice opened the first Jason's Deli restaurant in Beaumont in 1976. A true family business, his family worked lunches, nights and weekends to develop the business into a successful venture.

Today Jason’s Deli has 253 locations in 29 states and employs over 10,000 people 

Tortorice has a Masters of Business Administration from Lamar University and a Bachelors of Business Administration from Texas A&M University.

County annex funding options limited

Commissioners are moving forward in making sure a new building is constructed for the county’s annex unit. On Monday, the push for more land was made available to purchase, and property owned by Martha Richardson
near the courthouse square, could soon be owned by the county.

Affordable housing group gets OK

An affordable housing group presented its proposal to Silsbee City Council on Monday, and members approved to move forward to begin the process. Tejas Housing Group of Austin, presented its plan to build affordable housing on 12 acres located on Texas 327 East.

Freezing rain in forecast for the area

The National Weather Service in Lake Charles has advised of the threat of freezing rain that is forecast to reach as far south as Jefferson County.

At 10 a.m., the NWS posted a winter advisory warning of two rounds of freezing rain.

According to the warning, the first round will occur late tonight, after midnight in central Louisiana. Less than 1/10 of an inch of ice is expected, but elevated roads and bridges will ice up and cause hazardous driving conditions late tonight into Monday.

The second round of freezing rain will occur Monday evening into Tuesday morning. The freezing rain will extend as far south as the I-10 corridor from Beaumont to Lake Charles and Lafayette, and could extend a little further south towards the coast.

Fire damages Silsbee home

A house fire caused extensive damage to a home outside of Silsbee on Sunday. Silsbee Volunteer Fire Department was called to a house fire at 9:45 a.m. at 4085 Highway 96 north of Silsbee and found the structure spewing smoke from the attic.
