Intruder shot north of Silsbee

A Silsbee homeowner had quite the awakening Sunday night when a man crashed through his family's home on Old Spurger Highway. According to Sheriff Ed Cain, 21-year old Trent Durr was asleep with his wife and infant child in the 5500 block of Old Spurger Highway in Silsbee when he was awakened by what he described as a "loud bang" right before midnight.

Early voting begins Monday

City, school candidates are priming for early voting, which begins on Monday in Hardin County. Several positions are up for grabs in local seats, including Silsbee city and school positions. Silsbee City Council has three positions up for election including At-Large Place 1, District B and District A.

Head-on collision claims teen

A two car accident on FM 418, just west of Silsbee, claimed the life of a Silsbee High School senior and left four others injured. According to Department of Public Safety Troopers, the crash occurred at approximately 8:50 a.m. on Sunday, April 20, when a 2001 Ford truck driven by Jamarcus Myers, 18, attempted to pass another vehicle in a no passing zone while traveling eastbound on FM418. The Ford struck a 2008 Dodge truck head-on.

Kountze man pleads guilty in fraud case

A 53-year-old Kountze man has pleaded guilty in connection with his role in theft of government property, announced U.S.Attorney John M. Bales today. Tony Lynn Thornton, Sr. pleaded guilty to an indictment charging him with theft of government property of a value of less than $1,000 today before U.S. Magistrate Judge Keith Giblin.

Transgender teacher faces suspension

The suspension of a Lumberton Independent School District Intermediate substitute teacher has thrown the district into a firestorm of controversy, and sparked an outcry fromboth parents and community members on the sensitive issue of gender identity. Laura Jane Klug, a 52-year old transgender Lumberton resident, and substitute teacher, was teaching a fifth grade class at the Lumberton Intermediate School when she was asked to report to the office for a meeting.
