Harvey creates havoc in fall sports schedules

By Dannie Oliveaux

Hurricane Harvey did not only delay the start of school for all area districts but threw the high school fall sports schedule into disarray.

Silsbee, Evadale, Kountze and Lumber ISDs were scheduled to start school on Monday, Aug 28, but the rain from Harvey pushed back the start date.

The high school football season was set to begin Sept 1, but Harvey pushed that back for teams in Southeast Texas.

Randy Smith, Silsbee ISD athletic director, and head football coach, said his players did not conduct practice on Monday and Tuesday.

Demi Laney promoted to assistant softball coach

BEAUMONT, Texas – Demi Laney, who spent the last two seasons as pitching coach for the Lamar University softball team while pursuing a master’s degree, has been promoted to full-time assistant coach, LU softball coach Holly Bruder announced.

Bruder, who in five years has turned the fledgling LU program into one that receives national recognition, is happy that she was able to add a second full-time assistant to the staff.
