Local team brings home world championship

A group of boys from Silsbee, Lumberton and Buna recently went to the Mid-South Elite World Series 2018 and won a world championship on June 26.

Adam Smith of Silsbee and Mitch Moss of Lumberton, had watched their young sons playing Little League baseball and wanted the season to last longer and give their sons an opportunity to grow in the sport.

They scouted around, called their friends and found a group of young boys to play. They formed a selected baseball team called the Texas RPMS and join the 8 and Under Division of Nations Baseball.

Tigers 7 on 7 plays at state

The Silsbee Tigers competed in the annual Texas State 7-on-7 Organization State Tournament set from June 28-30 at the Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station. The Tigers played in Division 2 Pool L with  Brownwood, Fairfield and Midlothian Heritage. Silsbee lost to Midlothian Heritage in Game 1, then dropped a 26-20 decision to Fairfield. The Tigers closed out the tournament with a 28-28 loss to Brownwood.

Alexus Henry named Women’s Collegiate Field Athlete of the Year

ARLINGTON — Former Silsbee resident and University of Texas-Arlington track standout Alexus Henry claimed Women’s Collegiate Field Athlete of the Year accolades.

Henry, who graduated from Bridge City High School, claimed the high jump crown at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in early June after topping a height of 5-11 ½ in a driving rain.

Wilson named to 2A all-state team

EVADALE — Evadale High School junior Savannah Wilson was named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association Softball All-State Team for Class 2A.

Wilson, a right-handed pitcher, posted a 19-7 record with a 1.57 ERA. She pitched in 142.1 innings, allowed 77 hits while fanning 289 batters and walked 49.

Suarez wins championship by a stroke at annual Invitational Golf Tournament

Ben Suarez won the championship of the 51st Annual Invitational Golf Tournament at the Silsbee Country Club on June 17 by a stroke.

Suarez, who has played on the Adams Tour, at Louisiana Tech and McNeese, started the final round on Sunday with a five-stroke lead (137 to 142) over Ty Grissom.

Suarez had back-to-back rounds of 67 and 70 to build the five stroke lead in the Pro Flight division. Grissom was a picture of consistency with two rounds of 71.

In the final round, the pair played in a foursome with Kevin Meser and David Jones.

Fourth annual Raider Pride Camp attracts more than 125 youngsters

LUMBERTON — Lumberton ISD Athletic Director Chris Babin is holding another annual Raider Pride Camp this summer.

This is the fourth year for the camp, according to Babin.

“I got hired in May 2015 and I started the camps shortly after that,” said Babin. “The summer camp and my football numbers were alike. My football numbers went to more than 150 after three years. The first day of summer camp when we started there with about 90 kids.”

Babin said during the first four days during the first week of the 6-week camp, there was an average of 137 youth, both boys and girls. On June 12, he had 150 campers.

Nine local seniors playing in all-star tilts

Nine area seniors will participate in the fourth annual Christus All-Star Classic on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, June 14-16.

This is the seventh year of the All-Star Classic and the third year that Christus Southeast Texas Sports Medicine is the title sponsor.

The Southeast Texas Coaches Association (SETCA) announced June 4 the coaches and teams for the all-star games for softball, volleyball, boys and girls’ basketball, and football.

The softball game is 5 p.m. Thursday, June 14 at Crosby High School Softball Field.

The all-star volleyball, girls and boys’ basketball games begin at 5 p.m. June 15 in the East Chambers High School Gymnasium in Winnie.

Rebels dominated all-district team

EVADALE — The Rebels dominated the 25-2A All-District team.

Senior Chris Adams was named as the district’s Offensive Most Valuable Player, while senior Tyler Torres was the Defenisve MVP. Junior Alex Valencia was selected as the Pitcher of the Year.

First team selections were junior Parker Moye at pitcher, freshman Kip Nolan at second, sophomore Klay Slyvester at short stop, seniors Micah Sanchez and Chase Williams in the outfield and junior Judd Powell as a utility player.
