Newton hammers Tigers for 56-14 win

By Dannie Oliveaux

SILSBEE FOOTBALL

The Eagles (2-0), the defending Class 3A Division 2 state champs, took the ball on the kickoff and was forced to turn over the ball after the Tigers stopped them on fourth down and inches at the Newton 40-yard line.

Seven plays later, Silsbee quarterback Corben Johnson hit Sterling Herrington for an apparent 12-yard touchdown pass.

By Danny Reneau

KOUNTZE — The Kountze Lions dropped their season opener, 49-0, to Class 3A East Chambers Buccaneers.

After both teams turned the ball over on downs, the Bucs broke the scoreless deadlock with a 35-yard run by Nolton Shelvin midway in the first quarter. EC tacked on the point-after kick for a 7-0 margin.
