Prep volleyball season begin for area teams

The 2017 high school volleyball season kicked off earlier this week with plenty of action among the area schools.

On Tuesday, the Evadale Lady Rebels hosted the Kountze Lady Lions in non-district action. There were no results as of press time Tuesday. Evadale travels to Woodville for the annual Woodville Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 11 and 12, before returning home for another non-district match against Hardin.

Fall football practice gets under way

Rainy weather welcomes coaches, players

Rainy weather welcomed football players from Silsbee, Evadale, Kountze and Lumberton on the first day of fall football practice on Monday, Aug. 7.

And more rain is forecast for the remainder of the week.

Under University of Interscholastic League guideline, coaches can conduct non-contact drills for the first four days.

Lamar has 29 practices to prepare

Lamar University football coach, Mike Schultz kicked off the fall season on Sunday afternoon with the Lamar Media day.

He stated that Lamar would open the first of 29 practices on July 31 with a series of early afternoon practices that will run from approximately 4:00 to 5:30 each day. They will also be holding classroom instructions in the mornings and each day the afternoon practices will cover the same information that was relayed in the morning session.

Volleyball players begin practice

High school volleyball players hit the floor Tuesday as the first day of practice began.

According to the University Interscholastic League, Tuesday was the first day to issue equipment and conduct workouts outside the school day for all conferences.

The first day for scrimmages is Aug. 4 and Aug. 7 is the first day for matches. A team is limited to two contest per calendar week plus a tournament.

Sam Rayburn is number 2 bass lake in the US

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Minnesota’s state motto is “Star of the North,” which seems appropriate seeing Bassmaster Magazine has crowned the state’s second largest lake as the best bass fishery in the nation based on the recent release of the publication’s 100 Best Bass Lakes rankings.

Mille Lacs Lake, a 132,516- acre natural lake located 100 miles north of the Minneapolis- St. Paul area, soared to the No. 1 spot after months of research unveiled its unbelievable production of smallmouth bass. Mille Lacs was ranked No. 6 in the nation last year.

Fastest in Texas named to ALL-USA Sprint Team

Senior track star Kalon Barnes continues to receive accolades after earning a spot on the first team of the All- USA Boys Track & Field Sprinters by USA Today released on Tuesday, July 11.

After winning two gold medals in the Texas UIL State Track & Field Championships in the 100- and 200-meter sprints, including a state record in the 100 in a time of 10.22, the lights began to shine bright on the incoming Silsbee senior.

Arnaud wins third MGA Invitational

Two separate golfers knock in a hole-in-one

The Men’s Golf Association saw lots of familiar faces at its 50th Invitational golf tournament last weekend. Then again, they saw something that hasn’t been done in nearly a quarter of a century.

As the participants awaited results in the clubhouse early Sunday evening, tournament director Mike Sanchez addressed the crowd.

Evadale players named to all-district baseball team

The Evadale Rebels had an outstanding baseball year. They started off a little slow but came on strong to finish second in district and advance four rounds deep into the state playoffs. The district champion, Dallardsville Big Sandy, advanced all the way to the state title game where they lost to Muenster.

This year Evadale had four players honored with superlatives in District 25-2A.

Parker Moye was named as the Offensive MVP. Tyler Torres was the Defensive MVP, Daniel Bean was the Pitcher of the Year and Alex Valencia was Newcomer of the Year.

In addition, Cade Flowers was an all-district selection at shortstop and Micah Sanchez and Coy Williams were firstteam all-district outfielders. Klay Sylvester was a second- team all-district second baseman and Judd Powell was a second-team utility player. Wyatt Taylor, Tyler Montavlo and Bryce Tousha were honorable mention players.
