Silsbee downs Yates, Waco Connally; returns to state to defend 4A crown

HUNTSVILLE — In a matchup between the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in Class 4A, the top-ranked Silsbee Tigers (28-8) earned their third consecutive trip to the Class 4A state tournament with a 120- 103 win over the Houston Yates Lions in the Region 3 finals in the Johnson Coliseum at Sam Houston State University on March 3.

The game, which had 10 lead changes, was closer than the final score. Neither team led by more than six points in the first half.

Lions get past Central Heights in slugfest for 3A area win

LIVINGSTON – It wasn't pretty, but it was a win.

The Kountze Lions advanced to the Class 3A Region 3 quarterfinals with a 47-34 win over the Central Heights Blue Devils in the area round of the playoffs on Feb. 23 at Livingston High School.

The game was a back-andforth battle as both teams missed easy layups throughout the low-scoring affair. Kountze applied full-court pressure from the opening tip to the final buzzer.

Tigers tame North Forest for 30-point playoff win

HUMBLE — The No. 1- ranked Silsbee Tigers had a different look in the Class 4A area round of this year’s playoffs. 

Silsbee coach Joe Sigler normally goes quickly and often to its bench. But against the North Forest Bulldogs Sigler played most of the game with his starter and resulted in am 84-54 win at Kingwood Park High School on Feb. 23.

Yates ends Lady Tigers’ season

Silsbee falls in 4A regional quarterfinals

HUMBLE — The Silsbee Lady Tigers saw their season come to an end as the Yates Lady Lions won the Class 4A Region 3 quarterfinals, 83-74, on Feb. 19 at Summer Creek High School.

Silsbee had a 13-9 lead in the first period, but Yates came back for a 24-23 margin to end the period.

The Lady Lions went on a 7-2 for a 31-25 lead with six minutes left in the second. But Silsbee rallied with a 7-1 run to close the gap by one, 32-31.

Tigers whip Huntington in bi-district

No.1 Silsbee takes on North Forest in area round Friday

LIVINGSTON — The No. 1-ranked Silsbee Tigers opened up the trek for defending their Class 4A state championship with a 98-63 bi-district win over the Huntington Red Devils on Feb. 19 at Livingston High School.

“The pace was good in the game but the defense was not what I wanted,” said Silsbee head coach Joe Sigler.

Sigler said his overall assessment was that the style of play “helped us.”

Lady Tigers blast Jasper in bi-district win

KIRBYVILLE — The Silsbee Lady Tigers raced past the Jasper Lady Bulldogs, 77- 31, in Class 4A bi-district action Feb. 12 at Kirbyville High School.

It was obvious from the start the Lady Tigers (25-7) had too much speed and too much depth against Jasper.

Silsbee, who started off with a 13-2 run, took an 18-6 lead after the first period of action as five players scored in the frame.

Joubert records 500th coaching win as Lions maul Bob Hope

KOUNTZE — Head coach Duane Joubert picked up his 500th career win with a 110- 48 District 23-3A win over Bob Hope in Port Arthur on Feb. 9.

Joubert, who is coaching his 14th season at Kountze, has been coaching basketball for 22 years, 19 as a head coach. Before coming to Kountze, he coached at Hardin.

Joubert coached the Lions to three state championships in 2004 (3A), 2005 and 2007 (2A).

Tigers pass century mark for sixth time, beat Longhorns, again

HAMSHIRE — The No. 1-ranked Silsbee Tigers end the week, surpassing the century mark in a 107- 13 rout of the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns in District 22-4A action on Feb. 2.

It was the sixth time this season the Tigers has scored 100 points or more in a game. Their largest output this season was a 118-19 win over the Longhorns on Jan. 18.

The Tigers had five players in double digits with Devon McCain tossing in 19 markers, while Braelon Bush netted 17 and Jordyn Adams popped in 16.

Lady Tigers celebrate Senior Night with win

The Silsbee Lady Tigers celebrated Senior Night with a 60-42 win over the Hamshire-Fannett Lady Longhorns in District 22-4A play on Feb. 2.

It was the final home game for senior Jayla Harris, Ashley Martin and Carley Jones.

Emery Maze hit six of her game-high 15 markers in the first period as Silsbee took a 17-6 margin after the first period.

Lady Tigers remain perfect in 24-4A after pair of district wins

The Silsbee Lady Tigers remain perfect and in sole possession of first place in District 24-4A after two wins last week at Bridge City on Jan. 26 and at home against West Orange-Stark on Jan. 23.

Brandis Bases popped in a season-high 25 points, along with 13 rebounds and six steals in a 75-49 win over Bridge City.

Two other players tallied in double figures. T’Nya Irvin had 13 points and eight steals, while Emery Maze hit 10 and 11 rebounds.
