Two narrowly escape mobile home fire

A woman and her son narrowly escaped a mobile home fire in the 8500 block of Bussey Road north of Silsbee shortly before noon Tuesday. Kristin Edmonds said her husband was at work and she and her son Thomas, 11, were sleeping late when she awoke to crackling and saw the smoke.

SHS band performs at nation’s capital

The Silsbee High School Marching Band is in Washington, D.C. during spring break for their biennial spring break trip. This year the band was granted permission and performed in front the historic Lincoln Memorial Monday. The band entertained strangers and patrons alike in front of one of the most iconic monuments in the United States.

Kountze man sentenced in road rage shooting

A 52-year-old Kountze man was sentenced Thursday by a jury in connection with a road rage shooting which occurred near Lumberton last December. Thomas Wayne Wolcott had entered a plea of guilty but had asked to be sentenced by a jury rather than a judge.

SCAT officers are elected, monthly meetings scheduled

A meeting to elect officers and reorganize the SCAT (Senior Citizens All Together) program was held at the SCAT building in Kountze Saturday night. Roy Brown was elected president, Shela Fancher vice president, Barbara Greer as secretary-treasurer and Alicia Lockhart as an executive board member.

Butterfly gardener to speak in Beaumont

Nancy Denmark, an Orange native, will be returning to the Golden Triangle to share her experiences as an avid butterfly gardener with a presentation at the Logon Café in Beaumont. The free public presentation, sponsored by the Big Thicket Association as part of their Science Cafe series, will take place at 7 p.m. Monday, April 1, at the popular site. Denmark’s theme is “Building Healthy Garden Habitats for Pollinators.”

STEAM grants given to Southeast Texas teachers

Indorama Ventures Port Neches Operations, a prominent petrochemical company, and the Beaumont Children’s Museum proudly announce an investment of $84,417.00 towards the advancement of education in Southeast Texas. This substantial funding will benefit 29 teachers and groups across region 5 schools, supporting a variety of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (S.T.E.A.M.) projects and classroom resources. Along with these teachers grants, 5 educators were also recognized as S.T.E.A.M. Heroes for their outstanding contributions to STEAM-based learning and their dedication to K-12 education.
