Four children ranging in ages 4-8 were killed as a result of a mobile home fire in the early morning hours on Wednesday in Spurger.

The Tyler County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call of a mobile home fire at 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday on County Road 4547 in Spurger.

The caller told Tyler County dispatch that there were children in the trailer at the time of the fire, but that some of the occupants had escaped.

When firefighters arrived, they found four children in the burning home deceased.

The mother and father escaped with their 2-year-old and 5-month-old baby.

The mother and two children were transported to Tyler County Hospital. The mother suffered minor burns and the two children suffered smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire continues to be investigated by state fire marshals.

Tyler County Sheriff Bryan Weatherford said that three of the four children that were killed, were enrolled in Spurger ISD.

The American Red Cross arrived to assist the family. Woodville ISD assisted with counselers at Spurger ISD to speak with children and faculty.

“This is a sad time for this whole community,” Weatherford said.

Spurger VFD was assisted by Tyler County Pct. 4 Constable, the Dam-B VFD, and Fred VFD.

Accounts and donations are being set up by The Tyler County Booster newspaper and Spurger ISD.

When that information becomes available, it will be published immediately.
