A Beaumont man was killed on Wednesday as the result of a two-vehicle crash on Highway 69 near Jordan Road in Lumberton.

Lumberton Fire Chief Bob Simonson said a Lexus sedan was struck by an 18-wheeler head-on, killing the driver of the car.

The rig was traveling north on Highway 69 in the far right lane, according to Simonson.

Simonson said the car was traveling south and swerved into oncoming traffic before it was struck head on.

Lumberton police officials identified the driver of the Lexus as Robert Dale Powers, 47, of Beaumont.

Simonson said the call was received just before 9 a.m. When authorities arrived, Powers was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Simonson, the male driver of the 18-wheeler rig and his girlfriend self extracated themselves from the truck and both were transported to a Beaumont hospital with minor injuries.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation by the Lumberton Police Department with DPS assisting.
