Randy Read passed away nexpectedly but peacefully the night of December 12, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret Robinson Read, his three sons and their wives, Robert L. Read and Mary Christine Reed of Austin, Chris and Vonna Read of Memphis, Tennessee, and Randol and Tina Read of Bellaire, Texas, as well as his eight grandchildren: Kelvin, Hannah, Ethan, Grace, Felix, Luke, Samson, and Matthew. Randol Robert Read was born in 1943 in Lubbock, Texas, while his father, Major Robert Read, was fighting in the European theater. When his father returned from the war, Randy asked his mother, Lola, “Who is that man?” Randy grew up in the small town of Silsbee, Texas, hunting and fishing with his father, playing basketball and football in high school, and later attending Rice University, where he continued to obtain a PhD in Electrical Engineering. He went to work at Amoco, which became BP, and worked there until his retirement. Dr. Read held eight patents and managed research groups developing information technology for seismic oil exploration. Randy could fix anything. Sometimes he would break things just so he could fix them. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and went hunting with his sons this year. He was gentlemanly in his behavior, a fast friend in times of need, and a fine husband, son, father, and grandfather.
