H-E-B presents eighth annual Community Challenge

AUSTIN — It’s Time Texas (ITT), an Austin-based nonprofit that works yearround to advocate and activate healthier lifestyles for all Texans, kicked off the new year Jan. 8 with its annual “Community Challenge.”

Presented by H-E-B, the “Community Challenge” is the only statewide health competition of its kind, taking place through March 4.

The eight-week campaign is free and designed as a fun way to incorporate healthier habits into daily routines, all while earning points for one’s hometown.

Attorney asks for change of venue for toddler murder trial

KOUNTZE — Ryan Gertz, defense attorney for Jason Wade Delacerda, 40, of Kountze, has asked for a change of venue for the capital murder trial of four-yearold Breonna Nichole Loftin.

The request comes as jury selection began Jan. 9 in Delacerda's trial. 

In August 2011, four-yearold Breonna lived with Delacerda and his then-girlfriend, Amanda Nicole Guidry, in a trailer park off U.S. 69 near Kountze. Breonna was Guidry's daughter.

Fire destroys camper

The Kountze Fire Department responded to a fire in the 3400 block of Haynes Loop in Kountze. KFD received a call about 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 5 from a homeowner who reported his porch on his camper was on fire.

Local business owner killed in Mexico crash

LUMBERTON — A local restaurant has been closed since they were notified about the death of one the owners last week.

On Dec. 30, Gregorio and Maria Martinez, owners of Goings BBQ and Steak Company, were in Mexico during the holiday when the wreck happened, according to a Facebook post.

Maria Martinez died from injury sustained from the accident, while Gregorio Martinez suffered several broken bones and is in a Mexico hospital, according to Hardin County Health Inspector Re- Jena Bolton who spoke to the owner’s daughter, Maria, on Jan. 5.

Kountze boys, girls claim 23-3A wins

Both teams spotless in district play

KOUNTZE — The Kountze Lions improved their District 23-3A mark to 3-0 with wins over Warren and Hardin last week.

On Jan. 5, the Lions defeated Warren, 79-36.

Jeremiah Barker and Dante Carey drilled in a pair of three-pointers as the Lions tallied 18 points in the first period for an 18-4 margin. The Warriors had trouble getting the ball up court against the Lions’ full-court press.

Highlanders nip Tigers, 67-63

THE WOODLANDS — The Silsbee Tigers played poor defense as Class 6A The Woodland pulled off a 67-63 non-district win at home on Jan 2.

Silsbee seemed slow to get out on defense which allowed the Highlanders to popped in nine three-point baskets — most were uncontested.

Both teams started off the game slowly with The Woodlands hitting a pair of threes for a 10-4 margin. Jordyn Adam’s three-pointer in the final second of the first period tied the game, 10-10.

Museum schedules 117th Spindletop anniversary

Art in the Park

Temporary exhibit of student art from across Texas

KOUNTZE — Big Thicket National Preserve announced the installation of a new temporary art exhibit in the park’s visitor center.

Entitled “All the Little Things,” this art installations, a part of the Dream Rocket Project, encouraged students throughout Texas to create more than 70 pieces of art highlighting the vast array of plants and animals found in the Thicket.

Hardin County schools top, bottom out rankings list

Children At Risk, a nonprofit organization that advocates for children through research, education and public policy, released its annual Texas School Rankings list for 2017.

The list factors student performances on STAAR reading and math tests, each campus' overall performance, improvements in test results, and college readiness factors such as graduation rates, SAT/ACT participation rates, and rates of participation in AP/IB tests, to determine how schools rank throughout Texas.

The methodology of the ranking also factors in elements such as economic bias, adjusting for schools in economically disadvantaged districts who may not have the advantages other schools have.

Two-vehicle wreck sends 2 to hospital

A two-car wreck on 1122 north of Silsbee sent two people to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries Friday night, Texas Department of Public Safety spokesperson Sgt. Stephanie Davis said.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., Dec. 29, a white 2008 Nissan Rogue was traveling westbound on FM1122

The Nissan slowed to turn into a private driveway and was then rear-ended by the Acura, Davis said.

The impact of the crash caused the Nissan to roll over several times, coming to rest upside down in the middle of the road.
