Bernard Paul Zahm, 54, of Silsbee, passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at Village Creek Nursing and Rehab in Lumberton. He was born in Fort Knox, Kentucky. Funeral service was Tuesday, May 22 at Word of Life Tabernacle in Silsbee under the direction of Lumberton Family Funeral Home in Lumberton.

Barbara Coe Herbst

Barbara Coe Herbst, 93, of Lumberton, passed away Friday, May 18, 2018. She was born in Winchendon, Massachusetts. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 26 at Farmer Funeral Home in Silsbee. Survivors include her husband of 70 years, Robert Lee Herbst of Lumberton; son, Douglas C. Herbst of Lumberton; daughter, Margaret H. Breashears and husband Eddie H. of Allen; and three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

James Arnold Hartman Sr., 76

76, passed away Thursday, May 17, 2018. Funeral service was Tuesday, May 22 at Lumberton Family Funeral Home in Lumberton with burial following at Resthaven Cemetery in Silsbee. Born in Silsbee, he was a United States Navy veteran and owned and operated Texas Transport for 40 years. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Leavon Hartman; children, Josh Hartman and wife Kayla, Jason Hartman and wife Chelsea, James Arnold Hartman Jr. and Tracy Hartman; and five grandchildren.

Helene Elyse Hunt

Helene Elyse Hunt, 72, of Lumberton, passed away Saturday, May 12, 2018. Born in Port Arthur, she was self-employed for 35 years as a domestic maid service. She was a founding member of S.K.I.P. - Sick Kids need Involved People. She had the privilege of having dinner, twice, at the White House with President Reagan because of her involvement with S.K.I.P. Survivors include her husband, Jerry Hunt; daughter, Juanna Peyton and husband Timothy; sons, Jeff Clack and Jerry Clack and wife Michele; foster children, Evelyn Cole and Mildred Gilbeaux; sister, Cherry Belt; brother, Dale Mace; and 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

L Darius Bellamy

L Darius Bellamy, age 81, passed away Saturday May 19, 2018. He was born to L.D. Bellamy and Lillie Mae Barge on September 14, 1936 in Zavalla, Texas. L Darius spent his career as an LVN working in the Silsbee and Buna areas. He held positions at Silsbee Doctors Hospital and Silsbee Convalescent Center. He was retired from the United States Army where he served in the Vietnam War and Korean Conflict. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star medal. L Darius was a good man who loved his family and friends. Family gatherings and visits with Grandpa will be happy memories for all. Spending time outdoors mowing grass, working in his garden, and fishing were some of his favorite past times. L Darius also loved to spend time watching western movies. L Darius was a faithful servant who was loved by many. He will be greatly missed but his legacy will continue.

Silsbee woman killed in four-person fatality accident in Aransas County

HOLIDAY BEACH — A Silsbee woman was among four people killed in a two-vehicle fatality wreck May 11 in Aransas County.

According to a press release from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) in Corpus Christi, the accident occurred approximately 9:42 p.m. on State Highway 35, 12 miles north of Fulton.

SVFD responds to pair of house fires

Firefighters from Silsbee, Evadale and Lumberton spent several hours battling a house fire at 1225 Knupple Road on May 9.

The Silsbee Volunteer Fire Department responded to the blaze at 5:08 p.m. and immediately started battling the fire.

Louisiana woman killed in motorcycle crash

A Louisiana woman died from serious injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident May 12, according to a press release by the Texas Department of Public Safety in Beaumont.

The crash occurred three miles north of Silsbee.

Preliminary reports indicate that a 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling southbound on U.S. 96 when it traveled off the roadway onto the shoulder. In an attempt to get the vehicle back onto the road, the driver overcorrected which caused the driver and passenger to fall off the motorcycle.

Kountze’s Brianna Arline takes eighth in 3A girls’ long jump

AUSTIN — Kountze sophomore Brianna Arline finished eighth in the Class 3A girls long jump at the 2018 UIL State Track and Field Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus on May 11.

Arline’s jump was 17 feet, 1.75 inches — a foot shorter than her qualifying jump of 18-2.

Leonard senior Natalie Simmons won the event with a jump of 18-8 and sister Kelcie Simmons was second at 18- 4.5. Palacious’ Elizabeth Ortiz was third at 17-8 and Goliad’s Amaya Brown, the top qualifier, was fourth at 17-7.

Barnes blitzs field to take first in 100, 200

AUSTIN — Silsbee senior Kalon Barnes turned in a record performance in the Class 4A boys’ division as he defended his 100- and 200- meter individual titles at the 2018 UIL State Track and Field Championships May 12 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus.

Barnes, who set the 4A record in the 100 at 10.22 last year, captured first in the 100 with a personal best of 10.04 — nearly a half-second faster than second-place Ryan Martin of Stafford (10.41).
