Kimberley Viasana

Kimberley Denice Viasana, 38, of Port Arthur, died Thursday, May 10, 2018. She was born on July 15, 1979, in Galveston, to Lavonda Craft Benoit and George Viasana. Survivors include her father; sister, Kisha Warner and her husband, Robert, of Buna; aunts, Rita Lee and her husband, Robert, of Lumberton; Brenda Craft and her husband, Timothy Herrington, of Silsbee; DeeDee Craft, Sara Johansson, and Melissa Beaver and her husband, Mark Morgan, all of Buna; Sheila Derrick and her husband, Marshall, of Silsbee; Rachal Gutierrez of Saratoga; Linda; and Janice Bolton; uncles, David Craft of Buna and George Craft of Silsbee; and numerous other aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her mother. A gathering of Kimberley’s family and friends began at 2:00 p.m., with her funeral service at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, May 12, 2018, at Broussard’s, 490 Cemetery Road, Silsbee.

Jessie Stark

Jessie Victoria Stark, 87, of Evadale and formerly of Philadelphia, Mississippi, died Thursday, May 10, 2018. She was born on March 28, 1931, in Seymour, to Victoria McDonald Dillon and Green Dillon. Survivors include her children, Wayne Stark and his wife, Eva, of Evadale; Charlene King and her husband, Reverend Larry, of Boerne; Darlene Lassiter and her husband, Neil, of Twin Falls, Idaho; and Linda Holley of Jamestown, North Carolina; thirteen grandchildren; thirtysix great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Reverend Charles Stark; sister, Ruby Arnson; and brother, Roy Dillon. A gathering of Jessie’s family and friends began at 2:00 p.m., with her funeral service at 4:00 p.m., Monday, May 14, 2018, at Buna United Pentecostal Church, 116 CR 833, Buna, under the direction of Broussard’s, Silsbee.

Ribbon-cutting ceremony held at new County Annex building

KOUNTZE — Hardin County officials, along with city officials from within the county, law enforcement, school district officials and others attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new County Annex Building on May 8.

The new building is located at 1105 Redwood St., next to the county courthouse parking lot. The county broke ground on the new annex on Dec. 16, 2016.

Court makes short work of lengthy agenda

KOUNTZE — It took the Hardin County Commissioners Court about 25 minutes to approve action items on a lengthy agenda on May 8.

All action items passed by a unanimous vote.

Commissioners approved appointed County Auditor Angela Gore for another twoyear term and Human Resource Director Debbie Mendisabal’s permission to appoint a committee to revise the Hardin County Travel Policy.

Latulas pleads guilty to 2016 murder

Suspect forgoes jury trial

KOUNTZE — A man accused in the 2016 murder of a Hardin County woman plead guilty last week.

Ac - cording to Hardin County District Attorney David Sheffield, Joseph Anthony Latulas Jr. plead guilty May 4 in the death of Wendi Wanell Warner on Jan. 10, 2016, in a mobile home north of Silsbee.

Airline faces tough competition at state

KOUNTZE — Sophomore Brianna Arline is heading to her first UIL state track and field championships this week with hopes of bringing home a medal — especially a gold one.

Airline, representing Kountze High School, will compete in the Class 3A long jump at 8 a.m. Friday, May 11 at Mike Myers Stadium at the University of Texas in Austin.

Barnes,Turk aim to bring home medals

A pair of Silsbee High School runners are heading to Austin to bring home some medals at the 2018 UIL State Track and Field Championship set for Friday and Saturday, May 11 and 12 at Mike Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin.

Senior Kalon Barnes will compete in the Class 4A boys 100- and 200-meter dash, while junior Darshon Turk will run in the 110-meter hurdles on May 11.

SHS Winter Guard shines at Kountze meet

KOUNTZE — The Silsbee Winter Guard captured two first place medals for shows during the Kountze SETX Winter Guard Invitational competition held on April 14.

The group earned a first place in the Large Show division featuring its production of “Moana: How Far I’ll Go.”

Sixth-grader is top winner at annual KIS Science Fair

KOUNTZE — Austin Black, a sixth-grader, was named the Grand Prize winner at the Kountze Intermediate School annual Science Fair on May 3.

Grades 4, 5, and 6 all participate in this event with approximately 300 students involved from the science classes of Karen Key, Danielle Krapf, and Maurisa French.

Beulah Fay Provost, 86, of Silsbee, passed away Friday, May 4, 2018. Funeral service was Tuesday, May 8 at North Hardin Baptist Church in Silsbee with burial following at R.S. Farmer Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Farmer Funeral Home in Silsbee. Survivors include sons, Michael A. Provost and wife Sandra of Kenner, Louisiana, Jerome P. Provost and wife Lisa of Lone Oak, and Jack Provost Jr. “Zeke” and wife Sharon of Sour Lake; daughters, Sandra K. Kirbow and Lucinda “Cindy” West, both of Lumberton and Denise Eddings and husband Wayne of Silsbee; brother, Tommy Ray Powers and wife Rosie of Andalusia, Alabama; and 15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
