Tigers edge WO-S in extra innings for 22-4A victory

The Silsbee Tigers scored a 3-2 District 22-4A extra-inning win over the West Orange- Starks Mustangs at home on April 20.

The Tigers had struggled with injuries to key player for most of the season.

WO-S scored first as they tallied two runs in the top of the second inning.

With two outs, the Mustangs put a runner on base after he was hit by a pitch. They followed up with back to- back single for a 1-0 lead. They added their second run on a ground-ball single to first for a 2-0 margin.

Barnes leads Silsbee entourage to regional meet

JASPER — An entourage of Silsbee High School boys and girls advanced to Class 4A Region 3 track and field championship set Friday and Saturday, April 27 and 28 at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville.

Overall, the Tigers finished third in the boys’ standing with 76 points at the 4A District 21 and 22 Area Meet on April 18 at Jasper High School. Jasper won the area championship with 103 points and Hudson was second with 99.

SHS students test entrepreneurship skills at first-ever Economic Fair

Silsbee High School students got a chance to check out their entrepreneurship skills at the first-ever Economic Fair on April 19 in the high school cafeteria.

Shawni Roby and Brittany Hollyfield made formal displays from light bulbs called the “Life Light.”

Silsbee MS students win state-wide safety program campaign

Edwards-Johnson Memorial Silsbee Middle School students went above and beyond to help win the Stay- ALERT School Safety Program Spring Campaign, in an effort to help promote safety in the school district.

“Our AVID students have mustered a rigorous campaign to educate the students at Silsbee Middle School about the StayALERT program,” Principal Sunee Stephens said. “They brainstormed a plan and chose the activities they thought would make the biggest impact with their peers.”

10 years ago, fire destroyed First Baptist Church of Kountze sanctuary

KOUNTZE — April 12 marked the 10-year anniversary of a fire that destroyed the First Baptist Church of Kountze in 2008.

According to the April 16, 2008 issue of The Silsbee Bee, the fire was reported on a Saturday before Sunday’s scheduled services.

Fire officials received a call at about 1:34 p.m. that the church was on fire. By the time firefighters arrived, it still appeared to be something firefighters could control.

Annual Relay For Life event set Saturday at Silsbee MS

The annual Hardin/South Jasper County Relay for Life event is set 4-10 p.m. Saturday, April 21, inside the Silsbee Middle School Gymnasium.

The event was originally scheduled at Silsbee High School’s Tiger Stadium, but was moved inside because of the forecast for thunderstorms on Saturday, according to Nancy Neel, silent lead for the event.

Tigers beat LC-M; remain fourth in 22-4A standings

The Silsbee Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 6-4 District 22-4A win over the second-place Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears on April 13.

The win keeps the Tigers in fourth place for the final playoff spot, but the loss dropped LC-M into a tie for second with Orangefield.

As of Monday’s 22-5A standing at press time, Bridge City was in first at 6- 1, while LC-M and Orangefield are tied for second place at 5-2. Silsbee is alone in fourth place at 3-4.

LC-M beats Lady Tigers in extra innings for District 22-4A victory

The No. 17 Little Cypress- Mauriceville Lady Bears had to go into extra innings to claim a 4-1 District 22-4A win over the Silsbee Lady Tigers on April 12 in Silsbee.

The game was a pitching duel after the first inning. LCM loaded bases in the top of the inning, but could not score a run.

In the third inning, Silsbee had runners on first and second with one out but also failed to get a runner across home plate.
