Three Silsbee Woman’s Club members receive recognition for service

Three members of the Silsbee Woman’s Club were recognized recently.

Imogene Nelson was named as the 2017 Magnolia District Outstanding Club Volunteer of the Year.

She has served 17 years in the Silsbee Woman's Club.

Celebration Saturday for state champs

A community celebration honoring the Silsbee Tigers Class 4A back-to-back state champion boys’ basketball team is scheduled for Saturday, March 25.

The parade will start at 2 p.m. on 22nd Street and will go around to Exquisette Park, located on 21st Street.

TWO-TIME STATE CHAMPIONS

Coach Joe Sigler and his Silsbee Tigers boys’ basketball team nipped Dallas Carter, 104-101, for their second consecutive UIL Class 4A state championship on March 10 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. More than 12,000 people attended the game.

Firefighters respond to burning towels found in local eatery

LUMBERTON — A local restaurant escaped serious damage after firefighters discovered a laundry basket with towels burning on March 10.

Lumberton Fire and EMS Hardin County ESD No. 2 reported firefighters were dispatched at 1:37 a.m. to Catfish Cabin, 192 South LHS Drive.

Police nab student for sending threating message

LUMBERTON — A Lumberton Middle School student was arrested March 8 for sending a threatening message regarding the school, according to a Facebook post by Lumberton ISD Assistant Superintendent Gerald Chandler.

Chandler reported the student was detained by a Lumberton Police officer within a few minutes of receiving the message.

No students were harmed and the campus did not have to engage in a lockdown.

Silsbee, Evadale go 3-1 in tournament

The Silsbee Tigers posted a 3-1 mark in the Silsbee Baseball Tournament on March 8- 9.

The Tigers, along with Evadale and Lumberton, competed in the three-day affair.

Silsbee opened up play with an 11-1 pounding of Tarkington on March 8 but was blasted by Hardin-Jefferson, 13-1, on March 9.

Tigers whips Somerset, 80-61, in 4A state semi-final

SAN ANTONIO —Silsbee earned a spot in the 4A state title game with a 80-61 win over Somerset on March 9 in the Alamodome.

This was the third consecutive season the Tigers earned a spot in the state championship game. It was Somerset’s first time in the state tournament.

Somerset, 25 miles southwest of San Antonio, competed in 4A for the final season. Next year, the Bulldogs moved up to 5A.

SOUTHEAST TEXAS — The annual Girl Scout Cookie Sale is coming to a close March 25, so pick up your favorites while you still can or donate your favorites to local heroes.

Until then, cookies will be sold at cookie booths outside of grocery stores and other retail venues. You can also visit the Cookie Finder at www.girlscoutcookies.org to locate a cookie booth in your area.

Nominations sought for SHS Wall of Honor

Nominations are being accepted for the Silsbee High School Athletic Wall of Honor (WOH).

The purpose of the WOH committee is to recognize men and women who have graduated from SHS or Waldo Mathews High School and have excelled in high school athletics and may have continued to have success at the college, professional or Olympic levels, and have a history of good moral character.
