Texas General Land Office prepping short-term, long-term recovery efforts

LUMBERTON — Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush said last week the General Land Office has signed a contract with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide assistance to Texas residents affected by Tropical Storm Harvey.

Bush, who visited Hardin County on Sept. 27, said the assistance would arrive within “weeks, if not months,” through five short-term housing programs. He met with state, county and city officials during a meeting at Lumberton City Hall.

Kirbyville holds on for 36-32 win over Kountze

KOUNTZE — The Kirbyville Wildcats held off a late Kountze Lions’ rally and held on for a thrilling 36-32 win in the District 11-3A opener for both teams.

The Lions’ Keshawn Adams scored on a 7-yard run then ran for the two-point conversion to pull to within four of the Wildcats’ 36-32 lead with 31 seconds left in the game.

Kountze recovered the onside kick but was unable to complete the comeback attempt.

WO-S spoils Tigers’ homecoming with 34-17 win

Silsbee Tigers’ game against West Orange-Stark included a little bit of everything.

The Mustangs came into the game as one of the top-ranked teams in Class 4A, along with a 29-game winning streak.

Silsbee was celebrating homecoming with their eyes set on ending the Mustangs’ long winning streak.

Lumberton rezones land for assisted living facility

LUMBERTON — The Lumberton City Council rezoned a portion of the land on North L.H.S. Drive, Sept. 25, at the request of Riceland Senior Living, a division of Riceland Health Care.

The request included authorization for an assisted living facility at the back of the property, with the front entrance flanked by two commercial buildings, according to city manager Steve Clark.

HOF inductees recall days at SHS

The 2017 Wall of Honor inductees will be honored at a reception at 5-7 p.m. Sept. 29, at Silsbee High School. The reception will be in the gym lobby area and the induction will be in the Silsbee High School auditorium.

The recipients will receive their plaques at Friday’s homecoming football game.

Debris removal major topic at commissioners’ meeting

KOUNTZE — The Hardin County Commissioners Court voted 4-1 for a motion that allows the County Judge Wayne Mc- Daniel to increase the rate by 25 percent for a pre-existing contract — if approved by the county attorney — for disaster recovery services from Tropical Storm Harvey.

Precinct 2 Commissioner Chris Kirkendall presented the motion and it was seconded by Precinct 3 Commissioner Ken Pelt. Precinct 1 Commissioner L.W. Cooper was the lone vote against the motion, while Precinct 4 Commissioner Alvin Roberts and McDaniel were in favor of the motion.

Silsbee boys capture first place at Lumberton meet

LUMBERTON — The Silsbee boys captured first place in the Division 2 5,000-meter run Sept. 23 at the Lumberton Cross Country Meet at the City Park.

Five of the Tiger runners finished among the top 20 finishers — nine in the top 10. Silsbee finished with 33 points, Bridge City was second with 50 and Hamshire- Fannett third with 85.

Rebels use big plays for win

SARATOGA — The Evadale Rebels used big plays for a 40-10 non-district win over the West Hardin Oiler on Sept. 22.

After the opening kickoff, the Rebels’ Coy Williams broke losose for a 54-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage.

Williams ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead with 11:42 left in the first quarter.
