Spurger ISD calls for repeal of A-F school rating system

Spurger ISD’s Board of Trustees approved a resolution at its meeting on January 19, concerning the A-F accountability rating system for Texas public schools. The resolution calls on the Texas Legislature to repeal the A-F letter-grade school/district rating system that will be implemented in the 2017-18 school year as part of House Bill 2804, passed by the Legislature in 2015.

Lumberton

There were no injuries after a fire erupted in a mobile home off of Dogwood Street east of Lumberton on Sunday at around 1 p.m. It took crews an hour to contain the blaze with the mutual aid help of Silsbee Fire Department. Lumberton investigators are still determining the cause of the blaze.

“Red” recognized

Hardin County commissioners adopted a resolution recognizing L.W. “Red” Cooper for 24 years of service as Precinct 5 constable in the county. Cooper ran for re-election in November and lost to Carlos Montalvo, ending his tenure. He continues to serve as bailiff for the 356th District Court under the honorable Steve Thomas. Last week, Hardin County commissioner LW Cooper Jr. and son of “Red” read the resolution to commissioners court.

MLK Day Parade

Hundreds gathered for the annual MLK Day Parde on Monday through Silsbee. Several marched the streets in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. in a parade that featured parade marshalls Bro. Richard and Sis. Odessa Hawkins.

Kountze gets first shot at redemption

The Kountze Lions got its first shot at redemption on Friday after disposing of East Chambers in its first District 23-3A meeting this season. Kountze got the better of East Chambers last year in its two meetings, however it was a Region III 3A finals game that ended the season for the Lions at the hands of the Buccaneers.

Man trapped in logging truck crash

One person was seriously injured in a one vehicle accident on Monday morning at approximately 9:01 a.m. A log truck driven by Roy Pierson, of Livingston, was driving east bound about two miles east of the Highway 69 interchange on Hwy. 327 when the driver reached to pick something up.
