Family loses house in Jan. 19 fire

HONEY ISLAND — Silsbee, Kountze and Sour Lake firefighters responded to a call Jan. 19, around noon to Old Bragg Road.

Firefighters battled the blaze for an hour, putting out fires at the back side of a residence and in the roof, where the fire spread.

Homeowner Eva Hall, who was alone at the time of the fire, said she was putting clothes away when she first smelled the smoke.

Trio arrested for possible mail thefts in Silsbee, Lumberton area

BEAUMONT — Three suspects were found in west Jefferson County, Jan. 19, with mail belonging to addresses in Silsbee, Lumberton and Beaumont, Captain Crystal Holmes said.

Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle at 11 a.m. on Patna Road.

Deputies saw a handgun on the floorboard and a "large amount of" mail in the car before conducting a search during which they discovered evidence which suggested the mail had been stolen from addresses in Silsbee, Lumberton and Beaumont.

Silsbee ISD releases academic report

The Silsbee Board of Trustees released its annual Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR), which collects and reports data including student performance, graduation and retention rates, violent or criminal incidents on campus, and student performance in postsecondary education.

TAPR's data can range from one year to two years in the past, and does not necessarily reflect a district's performance for the current school year.

The TAPR reported a 97.8 percent graduation rate for the Class of 2015, compared to 89 percent for the state and 90.1 percent for the region.

Lady Tigers rout LC-M by 50

The Silsbee Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Bears, 47- 14 in the second half in a 77- 27 win at home in 22-4A play on Jan. 19.

Silsbee built a double-digit lead early, 17-7, and went into intermission with a 32-13 margin.

The Lady Tigers exploded for 23 and 22 points in the third and fourth periods, respectively.

Emery Maze tallied a gamehigh 19 for the Lady Tigers, while Akira Ray and Brandis Bass netted 10 each.

Tigers tame Bears, remain perfect in 22-4A play

LITTLE CYPRESS — The Silsbee Tigers returned to Little Cypress-Mauriceville on Jan. 19 to hand the Bears their first District 22-4A loss of the season.

The Tigers remain undefeated in district play.

The defending Class 4A champs posted 75-56 win on Jan. 19 as Jordyn Adams popped in a game-high 24 for the Tigers.

Silsbee ISD students recognize board

"Do we stand up, now?" several board members asked, craning to see the robot on the carpet.

"Not yet," SHS Robotics Team member Jaiden Johnson said.

The robot, which then proceeded to stack cones, was a part of Silsbee ISD's School Board Recognition Night, in which Silsbee High School students presented gifts, words of appreciation and a robotics exhibition in recognition of the board's support.

School library receives grant money

SOUR LAKE — The Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries announced the first round of 2017 Disaster Relief Initiative grants totaling more than $850,000 will be distributed to 17 school libraries damaged or destroyed during Hurricane Harvey.

Henderson Middle School, in the Hardin-Jefferson ISD, was one of 17 school libraries that will receive funds.

Delacerda attorney postpones change of venue

KOUNTZE — The defense in the Jason Delacerda capital murder trial for the 2011 death of toddler Breonna Loftin has postponed a change of venue motion until the jury selection process finishes.

The defense and prosecution will question dozens of potential jurors before the trial begins, a process which could take three to four weeks.

The jurors have been issued a questionnaire regarding their knowledge of the trial to determine if Delacerda can receive a fair trial in Hardin County.

Burning motorcycle found, owner not

A motorist witnessed a motorcycle on fire on Hickory Grove Cemetery Road, west of the Hickory Grove Church, at approximately 7 p.m. Jan. 13.

The witness contacted the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office who dispatched the Silsbee Volunteer Fire Department to the scene. Upon arrival, SVFD personnel found no contact person or sign of an injured party

The motorcycle had no license plates and was totally destroyed in several pieces.
