Work and faith keeps couple together

Every Valentine’ Day, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between individuals to express or show their love.

But it’s also a special time, especially for couples who have been married for long periods of time — a rarity in today’s world.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau statistics, more than half of the nation's married couples have been together at least 15 years. About a third have marked their 25th anniversaries, and only six percent have been married more than 50 years.

Lady Tigers blast Jasper in bi-district win

KIRBYVILLE — The Silsbee Lady Tigers raced past the Jasper Lady Bulldogs, 77- 31, in Class 4A bi-district action Feb. 12 at Kirbyville High School.

It was obvious from the start the Lady Tigers (25-7) had too much speed and too much depth against Jasper.

Silsbee, who started off with a 13-2 run, took an 18-6 lead after the first period of action as five players scored in the frame.

Joubert records 500th coaching win as Lions maul Bob Hope

KOUNTZE — Head coach Duane Joubert picked up his 500th career win with a 110- 48 District 23-3A win over Bob Hope in Port Arthur on Feb. 9.

Joubert, who is coaching his 14th season at Kountze, has been coaching basketball for 22 years, 19 as a head coach. Before coming to Kountze, he coached at Hardin.

Joubert coached the Lions to three state championships in 2004 (3A), 2005 and 2007 (2A).

Lumberton freshman advocates for dating violence awareness

LUMBERTON — When 14-year-old Silsbee cheerleader Tristan Dilley was shot dead Oct. 1, Zander Carrillo knew he had to do more to advocate for dating violence awareness.

“I don't know why, I don't know how, but it stayed in the back of my mind,” he said. “It just hurt. Why would a person do this? Why would they take a life? It makes no sense.”

Ice House Museum honors pillar of Silsbee community

The Ice House Museum is honoring local pastor and businessman Walter J. Proctor with an exhibit detailing his life, “A Walk Through Time: A Tribute to Silsbee's Reverend Dr. Walter J. Proctor,” through Feb. 24.

Proctor is the owner of Proctor's Mortuary and retired last year as the pastor of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Silsbee after 17 years.

Caring educator at JJAEP retires

Lifting troubled students out of their circumstances and encouraging them to struggle through their schoolwork can be a difficult task that takes a lot of care

That's why the Hardin County Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program at the Hardin County Courthouse was sad to see Alice Calloway retire in January.

Calloway was born in Newton and began teaching in the 1950s before moving to work for the Silsbee ISD in the 1960s. She retired in 1998.

Everything Will ‘Bee’ Alright

Evadale couple prepares for honey season after Harvey

EVADALE — Throughout Southeast Texas, thousands of bees belonging to one Evadale couple are preparing for the honey season despite last year's hurricane and dangerous mites.

The Collins Honey Company began as the brainchild of Daniel Glenn Collins in 1971, a senior in high school who ordered his first bee hive from a Sears, Roebuck & Co. catalogue. Daniel first began raising rabbits before deciding one day he wanted to raise bees. His father, Marvin Collins, now 86, decided to help.

Schools shift after reclassification, alignment

AUSTIN — The University Interscholastic League’s biennial reclassification and realignments for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 school years were announced Feb. 1.

The biggest change locally in Region 3 was Lumberton dropping from Class 5A back down to 4A. Lumberton’s enrollment was 1,125 — the seventh largest among 4A schools.

Silsbee, who played football in Class 4A Division 1 for the past two season, dropped to Division 2 with an enrollment of 784. The UIL threw the  Tigers into District 10 with Hamshire-Fannett, Hardin-Jeffe rson, Liberty and powerhouse West Orange-Stark.

Tigers pass century mark for sixth time, beat Longhorns, again

HAMSHIRE — The No. 1-ranked Silsbee Tigers end the week, surpassing the century mark in a 107- 13 rout of the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns in District 22-4A action on Feb. 2.

It was the sixth time this season the Tigers has scored 100 points or more in a game. Their largest output this season was a 118-19 win over the Longhorns on Jan. 18.

The Tigers had five players in double digits with Devon McCain tossing in 19 markers, while Braelon Bush netted 17 and Jordyn Adams popped in 16.
