Fire damages home

A Silsbee Volunteer Fire Department firefighter sprays water on the south side of a home located in the 2500 block of Neyland Road, northwest of Silsbee, on Aug. 2.SVFD reported the fire was reported about  11:46 a.m. and there was no one in the home at the time of the blaze which caused heavy damage to the wooden structure.

Volleyball teams play in scrimmages, jumps into regular season this week

After three days of practice, local high school volleyball teams hit the floor for scrimmages before their season openers.

Silsbee hosted Evadale, Hardin-Jefferson, Buna, Colmesneil, Port Arthur Memorial, West Orange-Starks in a series of scrimmages on Aug. 4.

While the varsity scrimmaged in the main gymnasium, freshman and junior varsity teams matched up against each other in the auxiliary gymnasium.

First day of prep football practice brings out more than 320 players

More than 320 players from four area schools hit the practice field for the first day of high school football practice on Aug. 6.

According to UIL guideline, players can not participate in any contact drills for the first four days of practice. On Friday, Aug. 10 is the first day for contract drills.

Most teams spent the first part of practice with players doing conditioning drills.

Social Security Day is Aug. 14, marking that day in 1935 when the Social Security Act was signed into law.

More than eight decades later, millennials wonder whether that celebrated social safety net will still be around to help when they reach retirement.

School supply drive until Aug. 13

A School Supply Drive is set until Aug. 13 for Silsbee ISD students.

Muckleroy retires as mayor

Silsbee Mayor Herbert Muckleroy announced his retirement as mayor during the special City Council meeting on July 30.

Muckleroy, a former Silsbee ISD superintendent, was elected mayor in 2005.

City Manager DeeAnn Zimmerman said Muckleroy announced his decision to retire during executive session.

Fire destroys mobile home

A firefighter sprays water on a fire which destroyed a mobile home which was located on Highway 326 across from Little Rock Assembly of God Church, south of Kountze, on July 30. Firefighters and tanker trucks from Kountze Fire Department, Silsbee Volunteer Fire Department, Lumberton Fire and Rescue and Sour Lake Fire Department responded to the blaze. According to Laura Pape, KFD spokesperson, the mobile home was a total loss and the family which included a mother and two children were not injured.

Drainage Advisory Committee holds second public hearing

LUMBERTON — More than 40 people attended the second public hearing by the Hardin County Drainage Advisory Committee on July 25 at the Lumberton ISD Performing Arts Center.

Precinct 4 Commissioner Alvin Roberts, who is the committee’s chairperson, said the meeting is for the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in which $1.3 billion has awarded to counties affected from the flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey.

Tigers’ state championship ring ceremony is Thursday at SHS

Silsbee ISD and Silsbee High School will present the 2018 UIL Class 4A Boys Basketball State Championship Ring Ceremony at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2 at Silsbee High School Gymnasium.

The Tigers finished the season 30-8 after defeating Somerset, 80-61, in the 4A state demifinal, and Dallas Carter, 104-101, in the 4A state final.

The state final recorded as the most points scored in a championship game in the 4A division.

Youngsters compete at TAAF state meet

The Silsbee CB Striders track team competed in the “Summer Games of Texas” state track meet at Texas A&M University in College Station on July 26-29.

CB Strides are a member of Region 1 the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF). They competed in 6U, 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U boys and girls.

The team returned home with two first-place medals, along with a second-place, a third-place and a sixth-place medal.
