Paul Norman Hughes
Paul Norman Hughes, 83, of Newton, Texas, passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 20, 2019.
Paul was born in Galveston, Texas on August 12, 1936. Paul graduated from Newton High School in 1954 and joined the United State Air Force that summer. He had a knack for business, was a supporter of the Newton County Fair and Auction, was involved with Relay For Life, assisted with hurricane recovery, and loved telling stories. He started most stories with, “You’re not going to believe what happened...” Many people believed he was a cat and had nine lives. He was famous for telling people “I’ve had worse than that on my lip and never quit whistling.” He was tough as nails, but equally loving and compassionate. Paul loved the Lord, the Newton Eagles, and especially his family.
Paul is survived by his wife of 61 years, Paula Charleen Hughes; daughter, Sherry Lynette Hughes Tracy and husband Ed of Newton, Texas, Paula Kaye Hughes Moore and husband Andrew of Lufkin, Texas, and Landa Gaye Hughes Karr and husband Jody of Newton, Texas. Grandchildren include Courtney Jaye Tracy Ponthier and husband Shannon, Tricia Kaye Hall Freeman and husband Sam, Paul Hughes Tracy and wife Erin, Brennan Taylor Karr and fiancé Kelsey Payne, and Evan Nicholas Karr. Great grandchildren include Kate Freeman, Grant Ponthier, Claire Freeman, Austin Ponthier, and Ryan Tracy, and also sister, Sarah Lynn Hughes Carter and husband Ronnie. Paul is also survived by many other family members, friends, fans, and cheerleaders who were always rooting for him.
Paul always believed that any day above ground was a good day, and those were certainly good days for his family. Little did he know, the best days still lie ahead, with him in the presence of our Lord and Savior, and that brings peace and comfort to those who loved him.
Having grown up dirt poor, Paul was a big supporter of those less fortunate and in need. Memorial donations may be made to the Newton Food Share at P.O. Box 627, Newton, Texas 75966.
