Local teacher association presents student scholarships

KOUNTZE — Three scholarships in the amount of $500 each were presented to Sarah Arsement, Reagan Mathews and Shelby Whiteside, 2018 graduates of Kountze High School.

The scholarship was presented by Kountze Classroom Teachers Association, a local affiliate of the Texas Classroom Teachers Association.

Silsbee MS eighth-graders receive the Presidential Award

Twenty-four Silsbee Middle School students received the 2018 Presidential Award in a ceremony held at Edwards- Johnson Memorial Silsbee Middle School on May 9.

To be eligible, students must meet requirements, including grade point average or, school-set criteria and choice of state tests or teacher recommendations during their sixth through seventh grade years as well as the first semester of their eighth grade year.

Sixth-grader is top winner at annual KIS Science Fair

KOUNTZE — Austin Black, a sixth-grader, was named the Grand Prize winner at the Kountze Intermediate School annual Science Fair on May 3.

Grades 4, 5, and 6 all participate in this event with approximately 300 students involved from the science classes of Karen Key, Danielle Krapf, and Maurisa French.

Silsbee MS students win state-wide safety program campaign

Edwards-Johnson Memorial Silsbee Middle School students went above and beyond to help win the Stay- ALERT School Safety Program Spring Campaign, in an effort to help promote safety in the school district.

“Our AVID students have mustered a rigorous campaign to educate the students at Silsbee Middle School about the StayALERT program,” Principal Sunee Stephens said. “They brainstormed a plan and chose the activities they thought would make the biggest impact with their peers.”

Silsbee ISD school board recognizes Robotic teams

The Silsbee Independent School District Board of Trustee met April 10, but not in their usual place at the Administrative Building.

The school board met in the Silsbee High School Auditorium to accommodate three groups of students the board wanted to honor.

The first group honored was the Silsbee Elementary School Robotics team.

All Faiths Day School annual art show April 12

The oldest pre-school in Hardin County will host an art show.

All Faiths Day School will host the event on Thursday, April 12 at 6:30 p.m.

The pre-school opened its’ doors in 1972 and the art show is as old as the school itself.

TSTA: Voters demand more state funding for schools

AUSTIN — The state teachers’ association president said majority of Texans more state education funding needed.

Noel Candelaria, president of the Texas State Teachers Association, issued a statement March 19 on the Texas Education Grantmakers Advocacy Consortium’s voter survey on the need for more state education funding.

“The overwhelming majority of Texans are sending a very clear message to the governor, legislators and the School Finance Commission: the state share of public education funding must be increased,” stated Canelaria.

Celebration Saturday for state champs

A community celebration honoring the Silsbee Tigers Class 4A back-to-back state champion boys’ basketball team is scheduled for Saturday, March 25.

The parade will start at 2 p.m. on 22nd Street and will go around to Exquisette Park, located on 21st Street.
