SISD trustees hold special meetings, school tax dropping

The Silsbee ISD Board of Trustees held special meetings on Aug. 7 and 8.

During the Aug. 7 meeting, the board dealt with numerous topics; most concerning the start of school.

The board approved the student dress code for the 2018- 19 school year. The district offered no new changes, but the state had a few which Silsbee High School Principal Paul Trevino addressed.

School supply drive until Aug. 13

A School Supply Drive is set until Aug. 13 for Silsbee ISD students.

All donation will go to the SISD to be distributed among students in need. Basic supplies are needed and for a full list, visit www.SilsbeeISD.org.

LISD first to open doors for school year

First day of school is Aug. 15

HARDIN COUNTY — According to school calendars already posted on the local school district websites, Lumberton ISD will be the area’s first school district to open its doors for classes for the 2018- 19 school year.

Lumberton ISD’s first day of school is Wednesday, Aug. 15.

LISD Superintendent Dr. Gerald Chandler said the district’s Site Base Team met several times during the last school year to develop the 2018-19 school calendar.

Board approves teachers’ pay scale

LUMBERTON — The Lumberton ISD Board of Trustees approved the 2018- 19 Teachers’ Pay Scale at its July 10 meeting.

According to pay scale, the starting salary for a teacher with no previous experience is $38,000 per year compared to the state’s base salary of $28,080.

A teacher with one-year experience will get a salary of $38,250, compared to the state’s base of $28,690. The salary for a teacher with five years experience is $39,250 (state $32,440) and 10 years of experience is $43,000 (state $38,080).

Schools consolidated

In 1955, the Honey Island Colored School was consolidated with Carver which increased the enrollment.

The assembly building was converted into two classrooms. Laura Johnson, who was principal at the Honey Island school, joined the Carver staff, while Mary E. Coleman and Eliza L. Fletcher was hired at the  elementary school.

Construction began on a new gym where the students would play indoor basketball and hold their tournament. The school changed the mascot from Eagles to Pirates.

Speaking to KHS Senior Class

Valedictorian Alivia Jones address her fellow classmate and audience during the Kountze High School graduation on May 25 at the Lions’ Den. More than 70 KHS seniors received their diplomas during the commencement ceremony. Jones will attend the University of Texas In Austin this fall.

Local teacher association presents student scholarships

KOUNTZE — Three scholarships in the amount of $500 each were presented to Sarah Arsement, Reagan Mathews and Shelby Whiteside, 2018 graduates of Kountze High School.

The scholarship was presented by Kountze Classroom Teachers Association, a local affiliate of the Texas Classroom Teachers Association.

Silsbee MS eighth-graders receive the Presidential Award

Twenty-four Silsbee Middle School students received the 2018 Presidential Award in a ceremony held at Edwards- Johnson Memorial Silsbee Middle School on May 9.

To be eligible, students must meet requirements, including grade point average or, school-set criteria and choice of state tests or teacher recommendations during their sixth through seventh grade years as well as the first semester of their eighth grade year.

Sixth-grader is top winner at annual KIS Science Fair

KOUNTZE — Austin Black, a sixth-grader, was named the Grand Prize winner at the Kountze Intermediate School annual Science Fair on May 3.

Grades 4, 5, and 6 all participate in this event with approximately 300 students involved from the science classes of Karen Key, Danielle Krapf, and Maurisa French.
