Charles Lockett, born on March 19, 1938, to the late Reverend Charlie Lockett and Azzie Lee Lockett, peacefully passed away on April 21, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was a cherished husband, devoted father, beloved grandfather, and respected pillar of his community.

Charles’s journey began at Waldo Mathews High School, where he graduated with the class of 1956. He was not only an academic achiever but also a vibrant member of the school band and served as class president, leaving an indelible mark on his peers with his leadership and musical talents.

In the tapestry of his life, Charles was blessed with the unwavering love of his late wife, Lucille Elam Lockett, for 65 years. He nurtured a beautiful family of five daughters: Beverly (deceased), Brenda, Carolyn, Charlene, Vanessa, and two sons, Kenneth and Kevin. Charles’s devotion to his family was unmatched, and he took immense pride in their accomplishments and joys.

Professionally, Charles dedicated 40 years of his life to Temple Inland, now Mead Westvaco, where he served as a mailroom supervisor. His commitment and dedication earned him the respect of all who knew him. Additionally, he spent 15 years at Robinson Funeral Home, providing compassionate support to grieving families as the first point of contact, demonstrating courtesy, professionalism, and kindness.

A man of deep faith, Charles found solace and community at First Baptist Church, where he worshipped and sought spiritual guidance.

Charles will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his unwavering love for his family, and his dedication to serving others. He enjoyed spending time with friends at the Charles Holmes Domino Shack, profoundly proclaiming himself the “Master of Dominos”. He also cherished moments with his children, grandchildren, and beloved classmates, sharing the latest news in their lives.

He is survived by his children, Steven Smith, Brenda Lockett, Carolyn (Donald Cook), Charlene Blackmon, Vanessa (Nathan McDaniel), Kenneth Lockett (Quintina), Dani Kay Gill, Kevin Lockett (Joanna), grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.

A funeral service to honor and celebrate Charles’s life will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, Mary 4 at First Missionary Baptist Church.
