It was built in 1917 as a bank.The bank closed in 1925 and numerous businesses then were in the building.The Hardin County Genealogical Society purchased the building in 2009, and after volunteers renovated the building it was opened in 2013 by the Hardin County Historical Commission as a museum.

Without question, one of the most interesting places in Hardin County or Southeast Texas is the Museum of Hardin County, located at 830 Maple Street in Kountze. The building itself, which was built to be a bank, is historical itself. But inside the building are amazing photographs, many of which were taken more than 100 years ago.
