Silsbee MS Receives Twitter Threat

At 12:42 p.m. on Monday, September 5, Silsbee ISD issued a statement stating that the district had become aware of a Twitter post regarding Edwards-Johnson Memorial Middle School. The statement assured that the district was takig the threat seriously and would increase police presence on all campuses.

According to one source, someone posted on Twitter that a shooting would occur at the middle school “tomorrow”, which would have been Monday according to the time of the tweet.

The disrtict was closed on Monday for Labor Day.

Then, at 8:29 p.m., the district sent out another message on Facebook stating that the police had identified the originator of the Twitter post. At that time, no direct threat had been found to exist. With that being said, the district would still increase police presence on all campus on Tuesday.

Concerning the tweet, it described the potential shooter.

Finally, the district released a statement on Tuesday around noon stating that, according to the police, no real threat ever existed. The individual described in the post was not responsible for making such threats.

A spokesperson for the district then reassured that Silsbee ISD will always be transparent regarding a potential threat. Also, the statement then went on to state there would be an internal investigation of the matter.

The district then reiterated that it uses SOpit, which is a way for students and families to report any concernt they have anonymously.
