Shirley Spurlock

Shirley Jean Spurlock, 87, of Fred passed away Thursday, October 19, 2023. She was born in Beaumont, Texas on March 21, 1936 to the late Charles Edwin Fry Sr. and Stella Winnie (Housley) Fry.

Shirley worked as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant at Silsbee Doctors Hospital for many years. She took great pride in taking care of her patients and gave genuine love and care to each and every one. Having come from a family that had nineteen children, it’s no surprise that she had such a servant’s heart! Shirley married her husband, Jack in 1950 and they were married for 23 years until the time of his death in 1973. She was a beloved mother and grandmother that adored her family. Shirley enjoyed gardening and was remembered for always growing the best Easter lilies and bachelor buttons. She enjoyed baking and cooking, but she may have liked cleaning and organizing even more than that. Heaven’s kitchen is definitely a little cleaner now that Shirley is there! She was so loved and will be deeply missed by all.

She is preceded in death by both parents; husband, Jack Spurlock; son, Dale Spurlock; siblings, Lela Harwell, Gladys Nowell, Opal Droptina, Helen Garza, Hazel Sharpton, Royal Hockingsmith, Virginia Fry, Christine Hamilton, Joe Ellen Pilling, Nelda Jenkins, Juanita Edgar, Roy Fry, Charles Fry, Don Fry, and twin brothers at birth.

Shirley is survived by her children, Charlotte Sterling, and Bryant Spurlock and wife Gina; grandchildren, John David “JD” Sterling and wife Juanita, Shaunna Hill and husband Justin, Michael Sterling and wife Shayna, Lindsey Spurlock, Ty Boaze and wife Leia, Brooke Dobbins, Jack Spurlock; great grandchildren, Luka, Averie, River, Camron, Miles; sister-inlaw, Linda Fry; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Olive Branch Hospice for the dedicated care they gave to Shirley. A special thank you would like to be given to her nurses, Becky Lee and Kim Spurlock as well as to her daily provider, Kathy Garsee.

Funeral Services were held at 1PM on Monday, October 23, 2023 at the Farmer Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at Franks Branch Cemetery in Fred. Visitation was held prior to the service from 11:30AM1PM.

Serving as pallbearers was Jack Spurlock, Justin Hill, Michael Sterling, Steve Metlon, Mark Jenkins, and Bob Jenkins.

Honorary pallbearers were Harold Hamilton, Roger Hamilton, Kenneth Hamilton, John David Sterling, Jonny Graham, and Terry Don Fry.
