Silsbee celebrates Homecoming with ribbon cutting

Silsbee celebrated Homecoming this past Friday with a special event: a ribbon cutting ceremony for Tiger Stadium’s new turf field. The ceremony took place as part of the pregame activities along with announcing this year’s Wall of Honor inductees.

Gary McGuire and David Green Jr. were honored this year for their accomplishments in and out of sports.

Gary McGuire, class of 1983, was an outstanding linebacker for SHS. After graduating from Silsbee, Mc-Guire went on to play for the University of Houston. Mc-Guire owns Gary McGuire Development Company in Houston.

David Green Jr., class of 1980, played basketball for Silsbee and earned District MVP in 1979. After high school, he played for McNeese University where he lead the Cowboys in assists and steals all four years. In addition to playing, Coach Green has enjoyed a stellar career coaching high school basketball. He was honored by the Southeast Texas Coaches Association as Coach of the Year in 2021.

Moving from the Wall of Honor, the coaches and selected players took center field along with Silsbee ISD Board of Trustee members. In addition, three influential former coaches were on hand for the ceremony, including Bubba McGallion, Craig McGallion and Charlie Woodard.

Dr. Gregg Weiss, Silsbee Superintendent began the ceremony by thanking the board of trustees for approving and supporting the project. Then, Coach Randy Smith gave a speech.

Jayron Williams, senior running back and linebacker, did the honors of cutting the ribbon.
