AUSTIN — The Veterans Land Board unanimously approved three critical changes for Texas Veterans benefits. With home prices on the rise, the VLB unanimously authorized an increase to the maximum home loan amount the VLB can approve for veterans seeking homeownership.
The Silsbee Police Department reported 23 arrests for the period ending Feb. 8.
HARDIN COUNTY — County Judge Wayne McDaniel reported that 398 citizens in Lumberton received the COVID-19 vaccine on Feb. 6 and are on track to vaccinated 1,500 first-dose vaccines by Friday, Feb. 12, thanks to county judges and mayor from Hardin, Jasper, Jefferson, Newton and Orange counties working together.
The deadline to file as a candidate in the Silsbee City Council or Silsbee ISD school board is 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12.
THE WOODLANDS – While freezing temperatures are in the forecast for parts of southeast Texas, it doesn’t have to add a chill to customers’ bills. Instead of cranking up the thermostat when the temperatures drop, customers can take some free or low-cost steps to help save energy and money on their utility bill.
KOUNTZE — No action was taken by the Hardin County Commissioners Court for a resolution to support the submission of an application by a developer for housing tax credit and allocation of housing tax credits for the approval of the new construction development and commitment of development funding in the form of a grant or reduced fees, during the Feb. 8 meeting in the Hardin County Court Room.

KOUNTZE — Superintendent Wayne Prokopetz, of the Big Thicket National Preserve, announced the preserve is issuing this season’s free feral hog trapping permits.

Education First Federal Credit Union distributed checks totaling over $48,000 to 128 local schools in Southeast Texas on Jan. 27. The donations are made through its “We’re Paying It Forward” program.
