Logan Walker won second place in the 37th Annual Protege Competition and Exhibition 2023 Art Show! The show was presented at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas.Not only did he earn a top spot win, he was also awarded a four-year art scholarship to the Lamar University Department of Art for the amount of $750 per semester and a $150 gift certificate for art supplies.

Texas women veterans connect

AUSTIN – The Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) invites Texas women veterans to join its Women Veterans Network at a virtual event on March 23, 2023. The event will highlight services and benefits available in various areas of the state and provides the opportunity for women veterans to join the network, meet regularly and share their stories. Veteran attendees will receive “Proudly Served” buttons.Texas has the highest women veteran population in the nation with over 200,000 women veterans.

2 SHS students get $100,000 scholarships

Two Silsbee High School students were awarded $100,000 full ride scholarships to Lamar University Thursday. Robert (Bobby) Barton was awarded the Southeast Texas Legends Scholarship and Xiaoxuan (Jenny) Tu was awarded the Presidential Scholarship.

Silsbee chamber, visitor center moves

The Silsbee Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center has moved to a temporary location until a new location can be built or remodeled. The new address is 220 North Fourth Street, in a location which formerly was a pet spa.

Lumberton ISD going to four-day school weeks

The Lumberton school board voted 5-2 last Thursday night to approve a school calendar for the 2023-2024 school year, calling for four-day hybrid school weeks. The hybrid calendar starts the school year with 5-day weeks and in October will switch to 4 day weeks through the month of March. During the STAAR testing months of April and May, students will return to a 5 day week.

Co-workers, friends, family remember Sheriff Holzapfel

Mike Holzapfel, long time Hardin County Sheriff, died Thursday at the age of 76. Holzapfel had been in the hospital for a short period of time when he took a turn for the worse and died, surprising many of his friends who were expecting him to recover and be back inaction.

Kountze man gets 10 years probation for 2016 robbery

Hardin County jury last week sentenced Austin Warner Marshall, 26, of Kountze, to 10 years probation for his part in an aggravated robbery that occurred almost seven years ago. The jury trial took place in the 356th District Court of Hardin County presided over by Judge Steve Thomas.
