Third-graders’ questions get council thinking

After a group of Silsbee Elementary School third-graders visited the mayor and City Hall on a field trip last week, Mayor Herbert Muckleroy reported the city council about the meeting and letters sent from students to the city.

“They were here to learn about what the city does and how it’s run. They had questions about a little bit of everything,” said the mayor.

Muckleroy said the teachers presented him with a group of questions from the third-graders.

Lions get past Central Heights in slugfest for 3A area win

LIVINGSTON – It wasn't pretty, but it was a win.

The Kountze Lions advanced to the Class 3A Region 3 quarterfinals with a 47-34 win over the Central Heights Blue Devils in the area round of the playoffs on Feb. 23 at Livingston High School.

The game was a back-andforth battle as both teams missed easy layups throughout the low-scoring affair. Kountze applied full-court pressure from the opening tip to the final buzzer.

Tigers tame North Forest for 30-point playoff win

HUMBLE — The No. 1- ranked Silsbee Tigers had a different look in the Class 4A area round of this year’s playoffs. 

Silsbee coach Joe Sigler normally goes quickly and often to its bench. But against the North Forest Bulldogs Sigler played most of the game with his starter and resulted in am 84-54 win at Kingwood Park High School on Feb. 23.

Guest speaker, award presentations highlight annual Chamber banquet

More than 270 people attended the Silsbee Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Meeting and Award’s Banquet on Feb. 22 in the Silsbee High School Cafeteria.

The theme for the night was “A Night in New Orleans” and included Cajun food provided by Novrozsky’s of Silsbee.

Don’t Mess With Texas’ scholarship contest deadline set

AUSTIN – Applications for the 2018 “Don’t Mess With Texas” Scholarship contest are now being accepted. Eligible applicants include any Texas high school senior currently attending public, private or home school and planning to attend an accredited Texas college or university in the coming year.

Presented in partnership with Keep Texas Beautiful, the “Don’t Mess With Texas” Scholarship contest will award one $6,000 scholarship and two $2,000 scholarships in June.

Delacerda capital murder trial under way

Defense motions for mistrial on first day of trial

KOUNTZE — The defense for Jason Wayne Delacerda, on trial for the capital murder of 4-year-old Breonna Loftin in 2011, motioned for a mistrial on Feb. 20.

Delacerda is charged with intent or knowledge in the murder of a child younger than the age of 6. The defense pleaded not guilty. Breonna's mother, Amanda Guidry, is expected to face trial later this year.

Pattillo is Chamber’s Citizen of the Year

The Silsbee Chamber of Commerce has awarded its Citizen of the Year Award to Janice Pattillo former executive director of the Christian Care Center and current theater craftswoman.

Pattillo began working at the Christian Care Center in 1997, first in the pantry, then as an interviewer before becoming director in 2005.

Pattillo retired late last year to focus on her work in the theater, specifically the theater company, LiFT, which hosts acting camps and creates theatrical productions for the Silsbee area.

Fire reported at South Hampton facility

South Hampton Resource, Inc. officials reported a fire in several heaters occurred atthe Silsbee plant on FM 418 about 9:40 p.m. Feb. 14.

“This incident occurred during testing and commissioning activities of our fuel gas and circulating gas systems in our new Reformer unit,” said Turner Evans, plant manager
