McGallion and Linn take third at state

COLLEGE STATION — Kountze High School’s Brittney MaGallion and MaKayla Linn placed third in Class 3A girls’ doubles at the UIL State Tennis Tournament on April 18 and 19 at Texas A&M University.

McGallion and Linn defeated Isabel Holland and Jodee Perez of Big Lake Regan County, 6-1 and 6-3.

Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta held May 22

The Silsbee High School Physics hosted the 11th annual Cardboard Boat Regatta was held May 22 at the Silsbee High School Pond under sunny skies and warm weather.

At the Cardboard Boat Regatta, students applied their physics knowledge by building boats made from cardboard and duct tape. Teams worked together to build the boats and then decided who would paddle the boat in the regatta.

Local Dairy Queen receives PRIDE Award

For the second consecutive year, Dairy Queen in Silsbee received the distinguished PRIDE Award from the company’s national office for achieving a high level of food safety and cleanliness.

The PRIDE Award, which stands for Personal Responsibility In Delivering Excellence, is only given out to approximately 12 percent of the Dairy Queen restaurants in the area.

Local teacher association presents student scholarships

KOUNTZE — Three scholarships in the amount of $500 each were presented to Sarah Arsement, Reagan Mathews and Shelby Whiteside, 2018 graduates of Kountze High School.

The scholarship was presented by Kountze Classroom Teachers Association, a local affiliate of the Texas Classroom Teachers Association.

Versia Mae Mullins, 90, of Warren passed away May 20, 2018. Funeral service was at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, May 23) at Riley Funeral Home with burial following at Warren City Cemetery. Born in Boise, Louisiana, she was a former resident of Nederland and Silsbee. Survivors include her sons, Dock Mullins and wife Lou Ann and Rufus Mullins Jr. and wife Sharon; daughters, Beverly Williams and husband Roy and Patsy Spurlock and husband Homer; sister, Audrey Riley; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

William Allen Perkins, 69, of Spurger, passed away Thursday, May 17, 2018. Funeral service was at 12 p.m. today (Wednesday, May 23) at Honey Island Assembly of God Church in Kountze with burial following at William Hart Cemetery, also in Kountze under the direction of Lumberton Family Funeral Home in Lumberton. Born in Houston, he was a United States Navy veteran. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Adeline Perkins; daughters, Candace Michelle Roth and husband Thomas “Peanut” and Misti Ann Crosby; and five grandchildren.

Helene Elyse Hunt

Helene Elyse Hunt, 72, of Lumberton, passed away Saturday, May 12, 2018. Born in Port Arthur, she was self-employed for 35 years as a domestic maid service. She was a founding member of S.K.I.P. - Sick Kids need Involved People. She had the privilege of having dinner, twice, at the White House with President Reagan because of her involvement with S.K.I.P. Survivors include her husband, Jerry Hunt; daughter, Juanna Peyton and husband Timothy; sons, Jeff Clack and Jerry Clack and wife Michele; foster children, Evelyn Cole and Mildred Gilbeaux; sister, Cherry Belt; brother, Dale Mace; and 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
