Turkeys, hams distributed for Christmas

By Tim Collins

Silsbee residents in need because of Hurricane Harvey received a hot meal on Dec. 22 under the direction of Pastor Arthur Smith of Faith Temple Church of Christ in God and area schools.

Families received vouchers through local schools and exchanged their voucher for gifts, after a short prayer and directions by Pastor Arthur Smith and Treva Smith.

"We thank the school principals and all the schools that have invited each and every one of you here because the only way you got a voucher is through the school," Arthur Smith said. "The schools were responsible for making sure the students who needed gifts the most would be able to receive something for Christmas this year. In the meantime, we've also got some hams and some turkeys because we wanted to bless your households as well."

Center upsets Tigers, 76-74

By Dannie Oliveaux

CENTER — Jaterious Evans hit two free throws with 15.3 seconds left as the Center Roughriders upset the No. 1-ranked Silsbee Tigers, 76- 74, before a packed crowd on Dec. 19.

The win was not certain, not even in the final seconds. In fact, the final 15 seconds took nearly four minutes to complete.

Six-foot-5 Reggie Daniels’ block of Kalon Barnes’ shot at the rim started the transition that led to Evans being fouled and going to the line for two.

This year, more than $21,000 was raised through Walmart. It was a huge increase from $900 raised for three families in 2016.

“We raised money all year,” said Daniel Tucker, Walmart store manager. “But earlier this month, we received a $10,000 donation from a local family.”

Silsbee Little Theater make offer on Pines Theater

By Tim Collins

The Silsbee Little Theater has made an offer on the Pines Theater to AMC Theatres.

Barri Hoffman, president of Silsbee Little Theater, said if their offer to AMC Theatres is accepted, they plan to renovate the Pines into a multi-purpose entertainment venue with the capability of hosting live theater and music, but she emphasized the Pines would continue to show movies.

"We want to renovate the theater and have a similar venue like the Pines Theater in Lufkin, which is a multi-purpose venue," she said. "They have concerts there, they have community theater there, and they show movies there. We're looking at something along those lines."
