HOF inductees recall days at SHS

The 2017 Wall of Honor inductees will be honored at a reception at 5-7 p.m. Sept. 29, at Silsbee High School. The reception will be in the gym lobby area and the induction will be in the Silsbee High School auditorium.

The recipients will receive their plaques at Friday’s homecoming football game.

Debris removal major topic at commissioners’ meeting

KOUNTZE — The Hardin County Commissioners Court voted 4-1 for a motion that allows the County Judge Wayne Mc- Daniel to increase the rate by 25 percent for a pre-existing contract — if approved by the county attorney — for disaster recovery services from Tropical Storm Harvey.

Precinct 2 Commissioner Chris Kirkendall presented the motion and it was seconded by Precinct 3 Commissioner Ken Pelt. Precinct 1 Commissioner L.W. Cooper was the lone vote against the motion, while Precinct 4 Commissioner Alvin Roberts and McDaniel were in favor of the motion.

Silsbee boys capture first place at Lumberton meet

LUMBERTON — The Silsbee boys captured first place in the Division 2 5,000-meter run Sept. 23 at the Lumberton Cross Country Meet at the City Park.

Five of the Tiger runners finished among the top 20 finishers — nine in the top 10. Silsbee finished with 33 points, Bridge City was second with 50 and Hamshire- Fannett third with 85.

Rebels use big plays for win

SARATOGA — The Evadale Rebels used big plays for a 40-10 non-district win over the West Hardin Oiler on Sept. 22.

After the opening kickoff, the Rebels’ Coy Williams broke losose for a 54-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage.

Williams ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead with 11:42 left in the first quarter.

LU Class of 1967 celebrates 50th Reunion

BEAUMONT -- Lamar University will host a 50th anniversary reunion on Saturday, Sept. 30, to commemorate the last five decades of memories for that graduating class.

The reunion will begin with a Welcome Social at 10:30 a.m., followed by a Golden Circle luncheon at noon honoring the Class of 1924-1967. Festivities will also include campus tours, a meet-andgreet, a tour of the Spindletop- Gladys City Boomtown Museum, a pre-game party, and the LU vs. Nicholls State football game.

Fred woman wins $1,000 from game

Three Brookshire Brothers shoppers have more money in their pockets after competing in “Money Bag Game Live” at the Texas State Forest Festival.

The three qualified for the contest during Brookshire Brothers 12 Week Summer Promotion – The Price is Right. On Saturday, Sept. 23, Phillip Solly, Misty Lee and Kathryn Johnson each played the game in front of a live audience in the hopes of winning a million dollars.

Former Silsbee woman is feature author in Galveston

Former Silsbee woman, Jas T. Ward, will be the featured author at a book signing at the Strand Gallery on Thursday, Sept. 28th from 5 to 7 p.m.

She will have copies of her new book “Soul Bound: The Warrior” available there for signing.

This is just the latest of several best sellers that she has written.

Council votes 4-3 to buy building for new City Hall

Mayor Herbert Muckleroy broke a 3-3 tie as the Silsbee City Council approved the purchase of the old Texas Home Health Building located on Highway 327.

The final vote was 4-3. Councilmembers Gary Strahan, Jim Willis and Chris Barnes voted in favor of the purchasing the building, while Councilmembers Thomas Tyler, Adalaide Balaban and Susan Bard against.

Video shows late hit on Jasper QB by Tiger player

A video of a hit during last Friday night’s football game between Silsbee and Jasper that went viral has resulted in the discipline of a Silsbee player.

Coach Randy Smith told the Beaumont Enterprise on Monday the player who hit the Jasper player will be disciplined. The player was identified as Aaron Sells.

Suspect arrested

Silsbee Police Officer Carlos Montalvo (center) arrested an unidentifed suspect after windshields and windows in about 15 vehicles were reported damaged about noon on Sept. 19. Walking with Montalvo is Police Chief Waylan Rhodes.
