Barnes wins 100, 200 state titles

By Scott McDonald

Who’s to say what Kalon Barnes could do if he ever runs a complete race. Even with minor glitches at the state track meet in Austin last Saturday, he still swept gold in the 100- and 200-yard dashes.

A Herculean effort on his part almost had the boys 4x100 relay team atop the podium, but instead they finished second in that race.

The Silsbee boys team scored 36 points in those three races, tying them for third in the team standings with Big Spring. Atlanta scored 43 to win the Class 4A team title and Dallas Carter was second with 40.

Silsbee relay, sprinters headed to state

By Scott McDonald

A quintet of Silsbee sprinters aspire to reach the medal podium at the state tack and field meet this Saturday. For three of them, they’re not just chasing history — they’re trying to repeat family history.

Three members of the 1988 Silsbee state champion boys 4x100 relay team have children running this weekend at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.

“We feel like we have to do the same thing,” said senior Calvin Tyler Jr., whose dad Calvin senior was on the 1988 state champion relay team.
