Alvin Odean Wilson

Alvin Odean Wilson, 65, of Beaumont, passed away Saturday, June 9, 2018. Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 16 at New Hope Church of God in Christ in Silsbee under the direction of J.B. Coleman Memorial Mortuary in Silsbee with burial following at Hickory Grove Cemetery, also in Silsbee. Born in Silsbee, he was a former resident of Tyler and had lived Silsbee before moving to Beaumont. Survivors include his daughters, LaTonya Helmich and husband Charles, Ronda Cartwright, Jackie Sells Coleman, Latalia Thomas and Larry Harrison, Lekeitha Wilson, and Tomiche Shivone and John Wyatt; sons, Alvin Wilson Jr. and Pauledro Wilson; sisters, Verline Lewis and Veronica Wilson; brothers, Jerry Wilson and wife JoAnn, George Wilson, Tony Wilson, Troy Wilson and wife Leatha, Terry Wilson and wife Marie and Fredrick Kelly; and 39 grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.

Mourad “Bo” Collier

Mourad “Bo” Collier, 72, of Silsbee, passed away Thursday, June 7, 2018. Funeral service was Monday, June 11 at Farmer Funeral Home in Silsbee with burial following at R.S. Farmer Memorial Cemetery, also in Silsbee. Born in Silsbee, he was a carpenter, a truck driver and a pipefitter out of Local 195. He was also a United States Marine Corps veteran. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Mary Lou Collier of Silsbee; daughters, Maria Caraway and husband Chris and Misty Shakeel and husband Syed, all of Silsbee; siblings, Melva, Nelda, Liz, Hazel, and Eddie; and six grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.

Mary Jane Dryden

Mary Jane Dryden, 60, of Kountze, passed away May 29, 2018 at home. A memorial service was held Saturday, June 2 at Agape Church in Silsbee. Cremation was under the direction of Broussard’s Mortuary in Kountze. She worked as a waitress until she became disabled in 1982. Survivors include her husband of almost 42 years, L.C. Dryden of Kountze; brothers, Chester Curtis Laurent of Silsbee, Herman Laurent of Spurger and Tommy Laurent of Silsbee; and sisters, Sarah Richardson of Mauriceville, Ruth Lilliemae Page of Clute and Shirley Darlene Laurent and Rose York, both of Silsbee.

Sunny skies and summertime temperatures welcomed the Silsbee High School Class of 2018 during their commencement ceremony May 31 at Tiger Stadium. Several thousand people attend the annual event which features speeches from Valedictorian Courtney Gore, Salutatorian Neeleigh Smith, Student Body President Jerry Paine and Senior Class President Emily Grice

B&G Club of Hardin County hosting awards dinner June 8

The Boys and Girls Club of Hardin County will host its Annual Awards Dinner at 6 p.m., Friday, June 8 in the Silsbee High School cafeteria.

George “Tic” Price, head coach for the Lamar University Cardinals basketball team, will be the special guest speaker.

The Cards lost to University of Texas at San Antonio, 76-69, in the opening round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament this season.

Headquarters for volunteers opens

Several hundred volunteers who are coming to help rebuild homes damaged by Tropical Storm Harvey will have a place to stay.

A ribbon cutting was held July 1 for the Hardin County Strong Long-term Disaster Recovery Summer Volunteer Center at the old John H. Kirby Elementary School, 1205 North 5th St., Silsbee.

Attending the ceremony were Hardin County, City of Silsbee and Silsbee ISD officials, Silsbee Chamber of Commerce members and representatives from several volunteer organizations.

Local Boy Scout receives Medal of Merit

LUMBERTON — Donovan Roe was the recipient of the Medal of Merit, an award given by a local Boys Scouts of America council of the performance of an act of service, or rare and exceptional character that reflects an uncommon degree of concern for the well-being of others.

He was presented the Medal of Merit by Jacob Major of Troop 181 during the Sabine District banquet at the First Methodist Church in Silsbee.

Carver reunion, Juneteenth Celebration set June 22-24

KOUNTZE — Former students of George Washington Carver High School are planning a 50-year reunion of the closing of the school, along with a Juneteenth Celebration this month.

The George Washington Carver Alumni Association will host both events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 22-24, on the old school grounds.

The theme is “It’s All About G.W. Carver.”

Schools consolidated

In 1955, the Honey Island Colored School was consolidated with Carver which increased the enrollment.

The assembly building was converted into two classrooms. Laura Johnson, who was principal at the Honey Island school, joined the Carver staff, while Mary E. Coleman and Eliza L. Fletcher was hired at the  elementary school.

Construction began on a new gym where the students would play indoor basketball and hold their tournament. The school changed the mascot from Eagles to Pirates.
